Broncos Split Even at Castleton Tournament, Down Host Spartans

Castleton, Vt. (October 9, 2021) - The SUNY Delhi women's volleyball team took a trip over the border to Vermont Saturday afternoon to play in their second tri-match of the 2021 season at Castleton University. Delhi broke even, responding from a 3-1 opening defeat to Eastern Connecticut State with a clean sweep of the host Spartans. The Broncos, now 14-5 overall, are back on the road next week for two NAC Matchups. Delhi looks to hold up its undefeated NAC pedigree as they head into their second round with conference matches at Cazenovia on Thursday and a long ride up to Canton on Sunday, Oct. 17.

EASTERN CONNECTICUT STATE 3, DELHI 1

Delhi started the tri-match with a close 26-24 first set win against the Warriors. ECSU came back with a vengeance and took the Broncos down in the next three sets. In the second set the Broncos fell behind very quickly and at the first time-out Delhi found themselves behind with a score of 11-3. Delhi was able to close the gap, getting on a 7-4 run on the Warriors, but they were unable to close out the set and ECSU took it 25-19. Delhi in set three started out keeping pace with ECSU, going point for point with good rallies, but again fell behind. ECSU went on to dominate the rest of the set taking it with a score of 25-11. In the fourth set, the Broncos were able to start strong and stay ahead for the first few points. ECSU chipped away at the Delhi lead and tied up the score at 8-8. After the timeout Delhi struggled to keep the momentum going and was hurt by services errors that put ECSU back in the lead. Delhi was unable to take back the lead in this set and it ended with a score of 15-25.

Leading the Broncos in kill for the match-up was Stephanie Burke, who knocked down ten kills against the Warriors. Burke also got on the board with two blocks and one assist. Witchney Clersainville was big at the net, holding the team high in the match with blocks totaling four while also landing four kills in the match. Marie Julian added eight more kills for the Broncos as well as picking up six digs and one ace. Rebecca Heuler led the team in digs, picking up 13 on the match. Grace Thomas dominated the assist column holding 27 on the match. The Broncos had a .132 attack percentage on 35 kills in the match.

DELHI 3, CASTLETON 0

Delhi jumped back on the court for their second match of the day facing off with host Castleton. Starting off the match strong, the Broncos took a quick lead over their hosts the Spartans and by the first time-out Delhi lead the match 8-2. The Broncos held the lead the whole set and went to take set one with a score of 25-15. Delhi kept the momentum going in set two by again taking a big lead over Castleton. The Spartans fought back and were able to close the point gap, but the Broncos didn't let up and took set two with a tighter set score of 25-19. Ending the last set the scores between the two team were with in points and briefly the Broncos found themselves down. Delhi was able rally to take back the lead at the end of set three with the Spartans right on their tails. Broncos took the set and the match with a set score of 25-18. This win left the Broncos 1-1 on the day and 14-5 on the season.

Reeling off ten kills for the Broncos in the match was Sage Renneisen, who also had a .381 attack percentage while adding one assist and two digs. Rebecca Heuler had a team high back at the service line with six aces while also picking up the team high in digs with 15. Grace Thomas had team high in assists with 29 on the match. Thomas also added three services aces for the Broncos, along with six digs. Delhi had a .316 attack percentage on 40 kills while picking up 48 digs.
