Men’s Basketball continue their historic season winning first ever NAC Championship

Farmington, ME - Delhi men's basketball traveled to play in the North Atlantic Championship against Maine Farmington, defeating the Beavers 83-77 in a great game. The Bronco's big second half led by senior Mavenson Therneus propelled them over top, giving Delhi their first-ever Division III NCAA Tournament bid.

"I'm just so proud of this group, we've battled a lot of adversity this season so to win the NAC and have the opportunity to go to the NCAA Tournament for the first time is huge," said head coach Zack Thomsen, "Our seniors continue to lead us and I couldn't be happier for them!"

The start of the game saw the Beavers jump out to an 11-0 lead as the Bronco's shots just weren't falling, they started the game missing their first seven attempts. Delhi would regroup and started to chip away at the deficit, pulling to within five twice. They would go into the half down seven, 41-34, as the first 20 minutes of action was full of runs for both teams.

Senior Jacob Beach had the team-high 10 points as he shot 57.1% (four-for-seven) from the field. He was key down the stretch for the Broncos, making four of his last five attempts. Isiah Barnes was making his impact felt on defense with two steals as he was tasked with guarding NAC Player of the Year, Terion Moss. He was also a threat on the offensive side, combining for 14 points with Lester McCarthy.

After hitting only one three-point attempt in the first half, going one-for-eleven, the Broncos came out in the second half revamped, knocking down six-of-fourteen threes. Therneus was a big part of that offensive surge, knocking down three big threes early. He would have 17 points in the second half after being held to just four in the first.

Delhi would leave it late in the second half, sitting at a five-point deficit until just five minutes remained. That's when the Broncos made their move, tying the game up at 70-70 and eventually grabbing their first lead of the night with three and a half minutes remaining. The Beavers, who started the game hot, held their lead for over 35 minutes before it was taken. McCarthy and Thernues would then stretch the newfound lead with two big three-point baskets to make it a three-possession game.

As the clock winded down in the last few minutes, the Beavers were forced to foul, sending McCarthy and Naphtali Regilus to the free-throw line who put the game out of reach. The horn would ring and the Broncos would be crowned with their first-ever North Atlantic Men's Basketball Championship since joining the conference in 2020.

74 of the Bronco's 83 total points came from their starters as four of them put up double-digit points. Mavenson Therneus would end with the game-high 21 points after a monster second-half performance. He shot 60% (six-for-ten) from the field and 67% (four-for-six) from three in the second half. Beach also was also a huge part of the win, scoring 18 points and pulling down eight rebounds. Barnes who fouled out late in the second half was spectacular on both sides of the court. He ended with 13 points, four assists and three steals. McCarthy added on 16 of his own points with some important shots down the stretch.

Beach would be recognized with the NAC Tournament Most Valuable Player after his incredible performance over the three game run. While McCarthy and Therneus landed spots on the All-Tournament team.

The Broncos earned their first-ever berth to the Division III NCAA Tournament. Selections for the tournament will be announced at 1:00 p.m. Eastern time, Monday, February 27 via web stream on ncaa.com.
