Men’s Basketball Lose double overtime thriller to UMPI 103-100

Presque Isle, ME - The SUNY Delhi men's basketball (8-6, 2-3) team traveled to play conference opponents UMPI in their second game of their Maine trip, losing 103-100. They held the lead for over 70% of the game but a late five point swing won it for the Owls.

The Broncos were in control for the majority of the first half, leading by as much as 15, until a late Owl push would bring the score to 44-41. Senior Jacob Beach and Lester McCarthy would be huge for the Green and Gold, making up 25 of the team's points. Beach led the way with 13 points and three rebounds off 75% (6/8) shooting from the field. While McCarthy put up 12 points, three steals and three rebounds shooting 62.5 (⅝).

The second half was more back and forth with nine lead changes. It would go down to the final second of regular time with Jacob Beach tying the game at 82-82 with 19 seconds to go on a close range jumper. UMPI had a chance to finish the game after chaos in the backcourt led to a decent layup opportunity. But Marven Louissaint was able to swat the chance away and send the game to overtime. The last time SUNY Delhi led before tying the game up in the final moments came at the five minute mark in the half.

In overtime, neither team could pull away until Pablo Quinones hit a big three pointer with 1:03 left to go up 93-90. The Owls returned with two points and were threatening to take the lead with another possession. With just 14 seconds remaining Louissant came in clutch once again on the defensive end, grabbing a steal from an inbound pass. This would lead to a free throw for the Broncos but it wasn't going to be enough as UMPI tied the game with seven seconds left with two free throws.

The Broncos battled foul trouble in the second overtime with two players already out and two with four fouls. They would find themselves up 100-98 with 18 seconds left to play before the Owls would make a five point swing to end up winning the game on a late three pointer.

Beach would end with his career-high 28 points in a 10 rebounds double-double effort. Isiah Barnes would also have a great game with 20 points, going ten-for-twelve from the free throw line. While Mavenson Therneus added on a 17 point, 11 rebound double-double to go along with two blocks.

Delhi will be back in action with more conference play, taking on NVU-Lyndon, January 13th at 5:30 PM at home.
