Utica, NY - The SUNY Delhi women's volleyball team came up short 3-2 in a back-and-forth contest against SUNY Poly. (23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 16-18).
A match between two teams that were very familiar with each other having competed against one another the last couple of seasons as part of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC). Poly has since made the jump this season to competing in the Empire 8 Conference.
The match was close from start to finish, with every set being decided by two points. Poly would take the early 1-0 lead, holding on to a narrow 23-25 victory in the first set. Delhi would bounce back in set two, flipping the score in their favor, tying the contest up at one apiece. The Broncos would ride that momentum into set three, taking a 2-1 lead and finishing with the exact same score as the previous set. Looking to capture the result was Delhi, as Poly would respond by making a late push to capture the win and force a deciding fifth set. The squads continued with the same trend in the final set, another back-and-forth set that saw multiple lead changes with Poly taking the 16-18 victory.
Strong performances came from fifth-year Sage Renneisen recording a team-high 15 kills, sophomore Madelyn Diep added 9 kills along with 26 digs of her own, and sophomore Brooke Shoppmeyer totaled 26 digs.
The Broncos move to 8-17, 3-0 in conference play and will next play Vermont St. Lyndon on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 11 a.m.
