Fast Relays and Regional Qualifiers Highlight Track & Field Trip to Utica

Utica, NY - The SUNY Delhi men's and women's track and field teams were back in action, this time at the Utica Blue and Orange Invitational hosted by Utica University. The meet was highlighted by a new school record and four new qualifiers to the All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference (AARTFC) Championships.

The biggest highlight of the day had to be the men's 4x200 meter relay of Deron Davis, Lorenzo Castro, Christian Cuevas and Joshua Jeffes. The quartet ran away with the event running a time of 1:29.48 to set a new facility record at Utica and shatter the Delhi school record by over two seconds.Davis and Castro ran the first two legs in a very fast 44.58 seconds putting the team in the lead by three-quarters of a second. Cuevas then ran 23.05 and Joshua Jeffes ran an incredible 21.86 to continue extending the lead. The previous Delhi record was 1:32.14 and was set at the NYC Armory in 1997 by Maurice Green, Carlos Commacho, Joslyn Doris and Shawn Cort.

Sticking with the relay theme, the men's Distance Medley Relay of John Amenta, Morgan Condon, Aidan Cutting and Seth Bywater won their race with a total time of 10:36.10 to punch their ticket to the AARTFC Championships in March. Amenta ran a great 1200-meter leg in 3:12.47 to put the team comfortably in first place at the first exchange. The team would never give the lead back. Condon ran his 400-meter leg in 53.39 seconds, Lees ran the 800-meter leg in 2:01.73 and Bywater anchored with a 4:28.52 for his 1600-meter leg.

Individually, the team had numerous other great performances. Deron Davis ran another lifetime best in the 60-meter dash, winning the event in 7.00 seconds. Davis is already headed to the AARTFC Championships in the event. Also already qualified for the Championships is Joshua Jeffes who won two events today. In addition to the 4x200 relay, Jeffes won the 200 meters (22.14) and the 400 meters (49.12). Mickenson Simon won the 60-meter hurdles with a new lifetime best of 8.70 seconds. That time ranks him as the sixth fastest man in Delhi history and qualifies him for the AARTFC Championships. The final AARTFC qualifier was John Amenta. Amenta won the 5000 meters with a time of 15:29.36 to punch his ticket.

Other strong performances for the Broncos came from Aidan Cutting who placed fifth in the mile with a time of 4:30.26 and Lorenzo Castro who placed sixth in the 400-meter dash in 51.84.
