2022-23 SUNY Delhi Track and Field Season Preview

2022-23 SUNY Delhi Track and Field Season Preview

The SUNY Delhi track and field team is almost back as they kick off their season this weekend at the Greg Page Relays hosted by Cornell.  The Broncos men's team comes into the new season as winners of the last two NAC Championships, winning in 2019 and 2022. While the women's team placed second in last year's championship with nine individual winners.

Delhi's men's team will look to repeat as NAC Champions this year after returning numerous standout runners. Junior Josh Jeffes will be instrumental to the Bronco's success as he set three new school records in the 200 meters (22.20), 300 meters (35.54) and 400 (49.18) indoors last year. In outdoor track, he also holds the school record in the 400 meters (47.71)  and 4x100. He was also awarded NCAA All-American and First-Team All-NAC honors after an incredible season where he was nearly an All-American outdoors as well.

On the distance side, returning runners Aidan Cutting and Seth Bywater will look to make their mark once again. Cutting was just two seconds off the school record in the mile as he ran a 4:17 last year. While Bywater placed seventh overall in both the 3k and 5k at the indoor regional meet last year. Both runners ended with Second Team All-NAC Selections.

The newcomers for the men's team display a ton of potential to get into the team and help out. Deron Davis sticks out as a runner who can immediately make an impact as he was a high school NYS qualifier in the 100m race.

The women's team will use this year to try and get over the hump and win the NAC for the first ever after falling short last year. They return Kadie-Ann Whyte who broke the school record in the 200-meter race last year.  Whyte secured First Team All-NAC with her success in the 100m, 200m and the 4x100 relay. Kitty Messina is another notable returner as she is closing in on the shot put and weight throws records at Delhi. She landed on the First Team All-NAC in the shot-put last year.

The women have plenty of new reinforcements this year with a lot of freshmen looking to make a difference. Freshman phenom Alexa Wolcott, a high school state qualifier in the 3k, will look to translate her incredible cross-country season over to the track. While freshman Zoe Rodi and Miranda Cole will compete in sprinting events.

The Broncos will compete at nine total meets this year. Their biggest events include the NAC Indoor Championship on February 12th and then the All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference on March 3rd and 4th.

Zach Brown will be in his second season as the head coach of the team. While assistant Sydney Steger will be in her first year with the team after a very successful cross-country season.

"I am excited about this indoor track & field season. We have some people who could do really well individually this indoor season. I am excited to see what some of the freshmen bring to the table and see how they develop this season," said head coach Zach Brown, "Josh Jeffes will have his sights set on qualifying for the NCAA Championships in March. This year will be the first year we compete in a North Atlantic Conference indoor track & field championship at the new facility, The Track at New Balance in Boston, MA. This will be an exciting and fun championship as our conference looks to support a consistent yearly indoor championship."
