Track and Field posts big marks one week from Conference Championships

Cortland, NY - The SUNY Delhi Track and Field Team competed in the Cortland Classic Invitational on Friday and Saturday as they prepared for the North Atlantic Conference Championship Meet next weekend in Maine.

How it Happened:

The highlight of the meet came in the relays, led by the women's 4x100 meter team as they broke the school record for the second straight week on their way to winning the event.  The quartet of Sabrina Richards, Miranda Cole, Zoe Rodi and Kadie-Ann Whyte dropped the record they set last week to 48.71 seconds, taking home the event victory.

The other big highlight from the relay team came from the men's 4x400 meter squad.  Lorenzo Castro, Deron Davis, Cristhian Cuevas and Joshua Jeffes posted a very impressive 3:17.50 time to place third in the meet and rank in the 20 in the Nation for Division III teams.  That time is the third fastest 4x400 group in program history. The astonishing part of the relay came from Jeffes who anchored the team in a FAT split of 46.32 seconds.

Jeffes also picked up an event win in the men's 200-meter dash running a wind-aided time of 21.63 seconds with a tailwind of 4.8 meters per second.  In the same race, freshman Deron Davis ran 21.83 seconds to place third overall. The other Broncos victory came from senior Aidan Cutting in the 1500-meter run.  He ran a terrific last 400 meters in the race, closing it in 1:01.3 to move up seven places for the win.

Not far behind Cutting, was junior teammate John Amenta who also closed fast to move up six spots in the final lap to take 3rd place overall.  The final finish from the men's team came from Morgan Condon, who placed fifth in the 110 high hurdles and the 400 hurdles. In the 110-distance race, Condon posted a season best time of 15.46 seconds and in the 400 hurdles he ran 56.37 seconds.

On the women's side, the most notable mark came from Miranda Cole who placed second in the 200-meter dash with a wind-aided time of 24.97 seconds.  That time will post as the fastest in program history in all conditions, although the 5.2 meter per second tailwind will not allow it to stand as an official record.  Also in the event was Sabrina Richards who placed sixth with a lifetime best of 26.04 with a tailwind of 4.7 meter per second.

Thrower Kitty Messina also posted a second-place finish for Delhi in the women's javelin.  Messina threw 31.09 meters to finish second with teammate Alyssa Cole not far behind.  Cole threw 28.86 meters to place fourth in the event.  The final finish of note for the Delhi women came from Alexa Wolcott in the 5000-meter run. Wolcott crossed the line in fourth place overall with a time of 19:33.18.

What's Next:

With the meet over with, the Broncos will now look ahead to the North Atlantic Conference Championships held next weekend in Maine.  The men will look to defend their conference championship from last year while the women will look to make the jump from second place to a title.
