Men's Track and Field Wins First Frozen 8 Indoor Meet, Women take Second

Boston, MA - The Delhi Track and Field teams traveled to Boston to compete on the brand new Track at New Balance facility in the first-ever Frozen Indoor Track Meet. The men's team took home first-place honors piling up 135 points, 40 ahead of runner-up Suffolk. The women took second place as a team with 89 team points.

Leading the way for the men were numerous event winners and all-time performances. Joshua Jeffes won two individual events setting all-time program marks. He first ran the 400-meters where he crossed the line first in a time of 48.52 to break his own program record. Then doubled back to the 200-meter dash where he ran the fastest time in program history with a 21.73 second clocking to win.

Following Jeffes across the line in that fast 200 was freshman phenom Deron Davis. Davis became the only athlete other than Jeffes in program history to run under 22 seconds, posting his lifetime best of 21.92 for second place. He also recorded a second-place finish in the 60-meter dash final where he ran 7.07. Following Jeffes, the runner-up finisher in the 400-meter event was Lorenzo Castro who posted a new career-best 51.06 second clocking.

The Bronco's strongest event of the day was the men's 60-meter hurdles where Joey Ciufo, Mickenson Simon and Morgan Condon swept the top three spots. Ciufo had an outstanding day, running a lifetime best of 8.73 in the preliminaries. In the final, he dropped his time even further posting an 8.64 to take the individual title. Simon placed second with an 8.73 and Condon ran 8.77 for third. Jeffes, Davis, Simon and Castro would then all combined forces to win the men's 4x400 meter relay in 3:27.28.

Distance runners also posted many top finishes. John Amenta was all horsepower on the day that saw him win the 3,000-meter with a time of 8:53.31. He would also place third in the 5000-meter run at 16:14.74 and in the mile with a time of 4:23.59, running a 59.8 in his last 400 meters. Senior Seth Bywater would win the 5000-meter run with his season-best 15:21.40. While Aidan Cutting placed second in the mile at 4:23.40 where he ran 60 seconds flat in his final 400 meters.

For the women, sprinters would grab a lot of the team's points. In the 400-meter dash, Sabrina Richards and Zoe Rodi took the top two spots. Richards won the race in 1:02.39 with Rodi close on her heels in 1:02.61. Freshman Miranda Cole ran a lifetime best in the 200-meter dash, the fourth fastest time in program history with a 26.53 second finish. Teammate Kadie-Ann Whyte picked up a pair of third-place finishes in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.12 seconds and the 200-meter with a time of 26.82.

In the longer events, two Broncos posted impressive career bests. Freshman Alexa Wolcott ran a huge 10:59.5 in the 3,000-meter race, placing second and breaking the SUNY Delhi program record, originally set in 2003 by Kelli O'Brien. Fellow distance runner Marissa Lombardi, whose previous best in the 5,000 meters was 21:10.82, ran an incredible race where she improved her time by over 30 seconds. Lombardi rolled to a 20:26.99 to place third in the event and move up to the fourth-best time in the program ever. Lombardi and Wolcott then teamed up with Mary Lyons and Kaylin Oreglio for the women's Distance Medley Relay where they placed second with a time of 14:05.19.

In the field events, Kitty Messina led the way. Messina won the weight throw with a toss of 12.58 meters and placed second in the shot put with a mark of 10.86 meters. Freshman Miranda Cole placed third in the long jump with a leap of 4.70 meters.

The teams will travel to Cornell University for their last full meet of the year before the All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Championships for those that have qualified.
