Men and Women's Track & Field finish second at North Atlantic Conference Championships

The SUNY Delhi Track and Field programs traveled to Waterville, Maine this weekend for the North Atlantic Conference Championships. Both the men and women placed second overall in the meet.

How it Happened:

The women's meet featured several highlights from the Broncos, including many NAC Championship meet records. Freshman Miranda Cole led the way for the Broncos winning the 100 meters in 12.27 seconds, the 200 meters in 27.45 seconds and ran on the winning 4x100 meter relay team with teammates Sabrina Richards, Zoe Rodi and Kadie-Ann Whyte. Coles time in the 100 set a new meet record, as did the 4x100-meter relay team with 48.90. Whyte also placed second in the 100 (12.92) and fifth in the 200 (29.23) while Rodi placed second in the 200 (28.41) and 400 (1:01.50) meters and Richards won the 400 (1:00.94) meters and placed second in the 200 (28.96) meter dash. Also contributing significant sprint points was Kimberly Dean. Dean added a fourth-place finish in the 100 (13.40) meters and an eighth-place finish in the 200 (29.89) meters and sixth in the long jump (4.43m).

The distance pair of Alexa Wolcott and Marissa Lombardi also performed very well for the Broncos. Wolcott placed second in the 1500 (5:02.27) meters and won the individual title in the 5,000 (19:05.44) meters while Lombardi placed second in the 5,000 (21:01.41) meters to give Delhi the sweep of the top two spots.

The final area for Bronco's scoring came from the throwing sectors. As usual, Kitty Messina was solid for Delhi placing second in the shot put (10.91m) as well as the hammer throw (37.19M) and fourth in the discus (31.89m). Teammate Alyssa Cole added a third-place finish for Delhi in the Javelin (28.46m) as well.

On the men's side, the team fell a razor-thin four points shy of the team winner in Thomas College. Strong performances from the sprinters anchored most of the teams' scoring. Leading the way was the duo of Joshua Jeffes and Deron Davis. Davis won the 100 (10.76) meter dash by a narrow 0.01 seconds to break the meet record in the event and placed fourth in the 200 (23.39) meters. Jeffes won the 200 (22.41) meters as well as the 400 (48.60) meters in a new meet record for that event. Jeffes and Davis then teamed up with Cristhian Cuevas and Lorenzo Castro to set a new meet record in winning the 4x100 meter relay (42.32). The Broncos also got huge points in sprints from Castro who placed third in the 200 (23.36) meters and 400 meters (50.56) as well as seventh in the 100 meters. Cuevas added points with a fifth-place finish in the 100 (11.71) meters, a fifth-place finish in the long jump (6.12m) and the high jump (1.68m) and an eighth-place finish in the 200 (24.76) meters. Finally, the men's 4x400 meter relay team placed second overall with Lewis Race joining Jeffes, Cuevas and Castro.

Also marching into meet history was senior hurdler Morgan Condon. Condon, who missed all last spring with an injury, came back with a vengeance this year. Condon stormed to wins and new meet records in the 110 (15.55) high hurdles and the 400 (55.49) hurdles. He also ran an impressive race out of the slow heat of the 200 (23.61) meters to break in and place fifth for Delhi in that event. Along with Condon, Joey Ciufo ran an impressive race in the 110 HH (15.79) for a second-place finish.

In the longer races, pairs of upper classmen led the way. John Amenta ran to an individual win in the 5000 meters (15:51.22). Also running well for Delhi in that race was freshman Nate Goodwin who placed fifth (16:29.56). Perhaps the most impressive all-around performance of the day came from senior Aidan Cutting. He started his day placing second in the 1,500 (4:05.16) meters. He then had to run the 800 meters out of the slow heat and threw down a season best by four seconds (2:00.78) to place fifth. As if that was not enough, cutting had only the 200-meter event for recovery and he then raced the 5,000 meters where he placed third (16:13.65). Freshman Derek Leiter also ran a strong season best to place fourth in the steeplechase (10:25.88)

With the NAC Championships in the rear-view mirror, the team will now look towards a last chance meet, the AARTFC Championships and the NCAA Championships all to take place in May.
