Women's Soccer Earns Thrilling 3-2 Victory Over Canton

Delhi, NY - The SUNY Delhi women's soccer team secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over SUNY Canton on Friday evening.

A match between two teams that were very familiar with each other having competed against one another the last couple of seasons as part of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC). Canton has since made the jump this season to competing in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC).

In an action-packed first half, Delhi wasted no time striking first. Just 10 minutes in from captain to captain, junior Kailey Leach found junior Shaniyah Myers in behind the defense for her first goal of the season to make things 1-0. The Broncos continued to pour it on when, just 2 minutes later, first-year Madison Thorbourne was the recipient of a perfectly played pass from sophomore Ava Battista to put Delhi ahead 2-0.

Canton would not go away and would find themselves back in the contest with a goal of their own from Meah Boyles, assisted by Kamryn Barnes. The shift in momentum was apparent as Canton would battle back to tie things up at 2 apiece, with Chamonix Jackson finding the back of the net off of a header from Shannon Platt. The Broncos response came almost immediately, as less than two minutes later junior Gabrielle Avallone would score another highlight goal, her third on the year, putting Delhi up 3-2 heading into halftime.

The second half was a complete flip-in script with the focus on the defensive side of the ball as both teams held one another scoreless. The Kangaroos would make a push late, but ultimately Delhi would hang on for the victory.

The Broncos move to 3-3 and will next play Morrisville away on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 6 p.m.
