Matthew Esposito Named as SUNY Delhi's Men's Soccer Head Coach

Delhi, N.Y. - Matthew Esposito, who most recently served as the assistant coach at RPI, has been named as SUNY Delhi’s head men’s soccer coach.

“On behalf of the entire SUNY Delhi Athletics Department, I'd like to welcome Matt Esposito to the Broncos coaching staff, said Bob Backus, Athletics Director. ‘Coach Esposito brings a strong NCAA Division III soccer playing and coaching background to Delhi, and we are confident that he will guide the men's soccer program to continued success in 2024 and beyond!”

“I'd like to thank Athletic Director, Bob Backus and the entire search committee for giving me this amazing opportunity. I am very grateful for the support, mentorship and guidance I have received over the years from all of the coaches I have worked with and my family,” said Esposito. ‘There is an impressive foundation of success already present within the men's soccer program, on and off the field. I am looking forward to the growth we will have as a team and to see these young athletes achieve their goals both in soccer and more importantly, in life.”

Esposito rejoined the RPI coaching staff in March 2022 after spending the previous three seasons as the head coach at Russell Sage College. RPI earned 2022 and 2023 Liberty League playoff appearances and reached the semifinal match in 2023.

Esposito posted a 21-19-2 overall mark with the Gators. During the 2019 campaign, Sage won nine games and finished second in the Empire 8. During the 2020–21 season, he led the Gators to a third-place finish and an appearance in the conference title match.

In the summer of 2021, Esposito was the head coach for the New York Shockers in their inaugural season in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL). He led the club to a 6-3-2 record and a semifinal appearance in the Division Playoffs.

A 2013 graduate of Eastern Connecticut State, Esposito was a two-year captain, leading the squad to numerous post-season appearances, including three consecutive NCAA appearances from 2009–2011. He finished his career earning a spot on the 2011 Little East Conference First Team and was the LEC Tournament MVP.

After graduating from ECSU, he remained with his alma mater and served as an assistant coach, helping to lead the program to a 23-10-5 record in two and a half years. Following his time at ECSU, he joined the staff at Utica College, where he assisted with all aspects of the program for the Pioneers as a member of the Empire 8.

Active with the New York Elite Alleycats FC, he is the head coach of the U-15 boys team and the club's College Placement Coordinator.

A native of East Haven, Connecticut, Esposito holds a USSF C license as well as a United Soccer Coaches Goalkeeping Level I Diploma.
