Men Beat Alfred State, Maintain Winning Ways vs. Division III Foes

DELHI, N.Y. (January 21, 2018) – The SUNY Delhi men's basketball team once again flaunted their supremacy against NCAA Division III competition Sunday, beating Alfred State by a 78-67 score. The win has the Broncos standing at 13-11, including 5-1 against Division III foes.

After several lead changes to start off the game, Delhi found its mark and were up, 38-23, at halftime. The Broncos kept the charge going in the second half, stretching their lead to as much as 24 at 73-49 with 6:02 remaining. William Knight drilled four of his seven 3-pointers in the closing period as the sophomore finished with a game-high 23 points. Payton Dean ranked second for the game with 17 points, even knocking down one triple on his sole try, as well as grabbing six rebounds. Stephen Harten was a major contributor in the win, racking up seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Jordan Fragale tallied 14 points with five assists, while Carlos Ithier notched a pair of threes on the night on his way to ten points.

SUNY Delhi shot 40.0 percent for the contest (26-for-65), compared to Alfred State's 37.9 percent (22-for-58), and made 12-of-32 3-pointers to dominate the Pioneers' 2-for-16 showing from downtown. The Broncos did trail in rebounds, 45-37, but came up with 18 Alfred State turnovers to finish with an 18-10 lead in points off turnovers.

While Delhi has enjoyed a nice stretch winning four of its last six, the Broncos enter the final six games of their regular season looking to make a claim for the USCAA Division II National Tournament. Head coach Zack Thomsen's team, after starting the year 0-4, are ranked 14th in the latest national coaches' poll. The USCAA's, hosted by Penn State Fayette, will field ten teams, with the Broncos eligible for one of the six at-large bids. Delhi's remaining USCAA schedule includes SUNY Canton on Tuesday, followed by Davis Jan. 30, Villa Maria Feb. 11 and SUNY ESF Feb. 13. In between those games are two NCAA Division III road contests at SUNY Cobleskill this Wednesday and a rematch with Alfred State on Feb. 10.
