Delhi Topples Fighting Saints 83-77, Wins Second Straight

DELHI, N.Y. (December 5, 2017) – The SUNY Delhi men's basketball team again played tough down the stretch Tuesday evening for their second straight victory, an 83-77 triumph over College of St. Joseph. With the Broncos ahead by as much as 13 points late in the second half, the Fighting Saints hitched a late rally, only to see Delhi make all the right moves to preserve the win and improve to 5-7.

Back-to-back baskets by Kori Henriquez, a 3-pointer and a layup, put the Broncos up, 73-60, with 6:18 to play. CSJ would then go on a 12-3 run to pull to within three at 75-72 with 2:49 to go. Delhi again added some distance, going up by seven when Jake Slobe and Payton Dean scored at 79-72 with 2:01 to go. The Fighting Saints still wouldn't go away, as they worked Delhi's lead down to two at 79-77 with 23 ticks remaining. When Slobe answered by splitting a pair of free throws, CSJ's chances of tying the game were quickly dashed when Stephen Harten came up with a steal and made a break for the game-clinching layup with 13 seconds remaining. A Carlos Ithier free throw made up the remaining point.

Slobe led the game with 16 points, making 3-of-9 3-pointers in 27 minutes off the bench. Jordan Fragale connected for 15 points, along with eight rebounds and six assists, while Henriquez rattled in 14 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Dean finished with ten points and seven rebounds, while Saquan Goland finished with two points and eight boards. Harten added five points, with Brandon Grayson adding eight markers.

Delhi forced CSJ into 22 turnovers for 24 points, and outscored the Fighting Saints, 42-32, in the paint and 12-6 in fastbreak points. Another big factor in the win was the Broncos' 17-for-28 trip to the free throw line, compared to CSJ's 7-for-8 trip. Delhi finished 44.6 percent (29-for-65) from the field and 8-for-28 from 3-point range, while CSJ clocked out at 47.5 percent (29-for-61) and 12-for-27, respectively.
