Broncos Finish on Winning Side of Low-Scoring Affair with Maine Presque Isle

DELHI, N.Y. (January 16, 2018) – It was a reversal of fortune for SUNY Delhi men's basketball Monday night against Maine Presque Isle. Having put up at least 90 points in their previous three games, but winning only one, the Broncos' 56 points Monday was enough to topple the Owls, 56-51. The win puts Delhi at 11-10 and 4-1 against NCAA Division III competition. It was the Broncos' lowest-scoring game this season.

On a night where Delhi shot 26.6 percent (17-for-64) and MPI 31.3 percent (20-for-64), the Broncos overcame a 30-26 halftime deficit, outscoring the Owls, 13-5, in the last five minutes. Trailing, 46-43, with 4:25 to play, William Knight, who totaled 67 points in his last two games, hit a three to tie the game, followed by Payton Dean connecting on his second triple of the night to regain the lead. Jordan Fragale made back-to-back jumpers to stretch the lead to seven. With Delhi ahead, 54-51, MPI's last-ditch effort to tie the game on a three by Deandre Duncombe fell short of the mark with just seconds remaining. Jake Slobe then connected on a pair of free throws to seal the win.

Fragale led the game with 18 points, with Knight right behind him with 15 points and seven rebounds, making a game-high three 3-pointers. Dean logged a double-double behind 13 points and 12 boards, while Slobe's seven points all came on free throws, finishing 7-for-8 from the charity stripe. Saquan Goland added nine rebounds, while Carlos Ithier drilled one 3-pointer on the night for three points.

Thought the Broncos trailed, 53-43, in rebounds, they forced the Owls into 19 turnovers for a 19-2 lead in points off turnovers; Delhi turned the ball over just nine times. The Broncos were 6-for-25 from 3-point range and 16-for-23 on free throws, while MPI fared 6-for-32 and 5-for-9, respectively.

Head coach Zack Thomsen's team have a busy week ahead of them, traveling to face Fisher on Wednesday and Maine Fort Kent Friday, then coming back home on Sunday to face Alfred State.
