Women's Soccer Prepares for the First Round of the NCAA Tournament

After winning the NAC Championships this past weekend in an overtime thriller, the Broncos are preparing for their first-ever official NCAA Tournament appearance. They take on six-seeded William Smith Saturday, November 12th at 11 a.m. in the first round.

The Broncos are in great form having won seven straight matches leading up to the first round of the NCAA Tournament. They outscored their opponents 24-6 with their last loss coming a month ago.

"The opportunity we have against William Smith Saturday means a lot for the women's soccer program at Delhi. If you asked us at the end of September if we thought we'd be playing in the national tournament, I'm not sure if you'd receive a lot of 'yeses'," said head coach Zach Ward, "This group has rebounded over the last month. We've gone from 2-6-4 on October 10 and have rolled off 7 straight wins since."

The Broncos went into the NAC Tournament and defeated NVU-Johnson, Cazenovia and Husson on their way to winning the Championship. The big win came over Husson after previously being defeated 6-0 in the regular season. The Broncos left it till late, scoring in the final seconds of regular time to equalize the score at 2-2. They shocked the Eagles with an incredible one-timed shot by freshman Shaniya Myers. The Broncos then went on to score the only overtime goal on an excellent team play to lift the NAC Trophy.

Kelsey Innes led the way scoring five goals and becoming the tournament MVP. While keeper Andraya Hunt saved 12 shots on goal, including eight in the championship. Olivia LeBrun also had a great tournament scoring in the final two games, with the tournament-winning goal in overtime.

"The mentality of the returning players from last season that lost in the NAC semi-finals really started to rub off as the season went along. Reanen, Mac and Casey, our captains, have been outstanding down the stretch and have really guided the program in the right direction," spoke coach Ward, "We are so excited for Saturday and this week has been great at training. No drop in intensity. These players aren't content just to have a seat at the table. They want to compete and are ready for the challenge in the first round."

The Broncos have started clicking at the right point of the season. They are the first SUNY Delhi athletic program to be featured in an NCAA Tournament.

"Regardless of how the weekend goes, we've had so much success this fall as a program and as individuals," said Ward, "But I think we'd all like to be able to play for another week "
