Men's Basketball Holds Down Five Spot in New USCAA Coaches Poll

USCAA DIVISION I MEN'S BASKETBALL COACHES POLL - WEEK 6

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (January 17, 2020) – The SUNY Delhi men's basketball team maintained their number-five ranking in the latest edition of the USCAA Division I Coaches Poll with 230 points. The Broncos pulled out two wins to wrap their three-game home stand with victories over Maine Fort Kent and Pine Manor to improve to 12-7 on the season and 5-2 in the month of January.

Delhi's two victories this past week each marked significance to the Broncos' postseason aspirations. The men's USCAA win over the MFK Bengals by an 87-65 score Saturday boosted their bid for mid-March's USCAA Division I National Tournament in Penn State Fayette. The national tournament consists of eight at-large bids. The Broncos' 87-58 ACAA triumph over the PMC Gators on Tuesday served as a precursor to the ACAA Tournament, hosted by SUNY Delhi, which runs from Saturday, Feb. 29 to Sunday, Mar. 1. Delhi will face the Gators once more this season at Pine Manor in the regular season finale on Saturday Feb. 15.

The USCAA poll's top five did not change from last week, as Washington Adventist topped the poll with 250 points. St. Thomas (Tex.) was ranked second, with Florida National slotted third and Bryant & Stratton Buffalo fourth.

Senior forward Payton Dean posted back-to-back double-doubles against MFK and PMC for seven on the season. He is now three points away from the 1,000 career-point milestone with 997, while racking up 800 career rebounds. Fellow seniors William Knight and Jordan Fragale are also within striking distance of the 1,000-point plateau, with Knight at 978 points and Fragale 943 points. Senior Justin Daoud, who reached 1K at Northern Vermont Johnson on Jan. 6, currently has 1,043 career markers.

With seven regular-season games remaining on the schedule, head coach Zack Thomsen's team has a three-game week ahead of them, starting at SUNY Cobleskill on Sunday at 3:00 p.m., followed by a USCAA road meeting at Albany Pharmacy on Monday at 2:00 p.m., then a home contest with Clarks Summit Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
