Broncos' Second-Half Surge Leads to 85-59 Win over Houghton to Wrap Home Stand

DELHI, N.Y. (December 7, 2019) – Taking the court less than 24 hours after a bitter two-point defeat, the SUNY Delhi men's basketball team left little doubt after a strong second half Saturday to take an 85-59 win over Houghton. The Broncos parlayed a narrow six-point halftime lead into a 52-point second half for the decisive win to head into winter break at 7-3.

Head coach Zack Thomsen utilized his entire 17-man roster to carry out his game plan against the Highlanders, including a heavy rotation in the first half. Leading, 33-27, at intermission, the Broncos turned in a big second half, outscoring their guests, 52-32, and shooting 21-for-43 and making five threes. Ten Broncos scored on the day, led by 17 points from Darius Hines and 15 from Norman Wilson. Glenn Butler nearly logged a triple-double with ten points, nine rebounds, and nine steals, as Jordan Fragale netted ten points with seven assists and five boards. William Knight recorded nine points.

Delhi shot 39.5 percent (34-for-86) with 9-of-32 on 3-pointers to Houghton's 35.4 percent (23-for-65) and 5-of-22, respectively. Though the Highlanders outrebounded the Broncos, 54-47, Delhi forced Houghton into 37 turnovers to seize a 36-8 lead in points off turnovers, and set a season-high with 24 total steals. The Broncos also led, 42-34, in points in the paint and 15-9 in second-chance points off 22 offensive rebounds.

The Broncos concluded a five-game home stand on a winning note in a stretch where they defeated Centenary, Castleton, and Bard. Friday night's game with Sage served as the lone setback, in which Delhi held a late 66-57 lead before the Gators went on a 17-6 run in the last five minutes for a 74-72 win. With Saturday's win, the men are 14-1 at home dating back to Nov. 18, 2018.

Saturday's scoring list also featured Mavenson Therneus with seven points, six rebounds, and three steals, while Jared Beach recorded seven points with four boards. Justin Daoud totaled five points and six rebounds, as Erhunosere Uwuigbe tallied three points and Jordan Jackson getting Delhi's final two points of the day. Bababukunmi Babalola added three boards.

Coach Thomsen's men will return from a three-week winter break heading to the two-day Utica College Classic Sunday, Dec. 29 to Monday, Dec. 30. They start things off playing Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute that Sunday at 6:00 p.m., followed by the host Pioneers that Monday at 3:00 p.m.
