Delhi Men's Soccer Wins NAC West beating SUNY Poly 1-0 to advance to NAC Championship

Utica, NY - The Men's Soccer team traveled to take on SUNY Poly in NAC West Finals and left with a 1-0 victory, securing their first-ever bid to the NAC Championship. After falling to the Wildcats 3-1 late in the regular season the Green and Gold secured the important one with their second-ever conference tournament win.

"I am so incredibly proud of this team and their determination. When we were struggling over the last few games of the regular season it would have been just as easy to break apart as it would have been to come together," said head coach E.J. Reutemann, " The players made a decision that they wanted to take last week to come back unified and reform the identity they had created in the beginning of the year. "

It was a tough first half with neither team able to pull away, combing for two shots on goal. Delhi's one chance came from a Michael Williams Jr. chance in the sixth minute which was saved.

The second half opened up and saw more chances for both teams. The Broncos would take seven shots on goal as they started to get going. The big moment came in the 68th minute when Gabriel Monterrosa put away his first goal of the season. He slotted away a cross on a beautifully one-time shot from outside the box for the game-winning goal. The precise assist came from Anthony Cuellar for his team-high fifth assist of the season after he intercepted the ball and crossed it into Monterrosa.

The Broncos would go on to play excellent defense to close the game and outlast the Wildcats. Keeper Jon Walch would make some incredible saves to halt their advances. He would make three solid saves in the second half to complete his second clean sheet in a row as Delhi has held both opponents in the tournament scoreless.

"We feel that over the past two games of the championships we have played our best 90-minute performances of the yearIt truly was a team win today but it would be hard not to mention Jon Walch our goalkeeper and captain who guided us to two clean sheets with his heroics," said coach Reutemann, "It is a fantastic day for the program to make history with being the first team to win a NAC playoff game and after today NAC West ChampionsWe look forward to building on the momentum we created heading into the conference final next weekend with an NCAA ticket up for grabs."

Delhi will move on to their first-ever NAC Championship match, taking on Husson away on Saturday, November 5th at 1 p.m.
