The Broncos Cut Down the Mighty Oaks After Delhi Finds Late Goal Magic Again

Delhi - The Delhi Broncos (3-1) get their third win of the season after a 2-1 victory mid-Sunday against SUNY ESF. The Green and Gold are off to their best start under head coach E.J. Reutemann and since 2018 when they also went 3-1.

"I thought we came out very energetic and intense in the first half and looked like a very hungry group. We created a lot of chances but we're not able to break away. It was a very positive sign to see the group come together over the last few days after a loss in the buildup to this important match," said head coach Reutemann.

Delhi started the game putting sustained pressure on the mighty Oaks defense, shooting 11 times in the first half. It didn't take long for the Broncos to find their first, first-half goal of the year. In the 24th minute, Michael Williams Jr. placed an incredible ball off the goalkeeper's hands and into the back of the net from outside the box. The goal was set up by Anthony Cuellar and last week's NAC Player of the Week, Matt Serrao for an incredible team play.

SUNY ESF would equalize just four minutes into the second half. But the Delhi attack wouldn't be stopped with 19 total shots on the day. They left it late, scoring in the 86th minute to pull ahead. The second goal came from another Anthony Cuellar assist as he set up Michael Williams Jr. again for a tap-in. Williams Jr. was positioned in the perfect spot as the ball was lofted around the goalkeeper to his chest for the score.

Once again, Delhi used their late goal magic to take down their opponent. Their defense really stepped up as well, holding the Might Oaks to just four total shots after they had 56 shots in their previous three games. Vaughn Bottex was instrumental in holding the ESF offense to that little of shots.

"We stuck to our script after going 1-1 and it was another grind out complete team win. Anthony Cuellar provided both assists to what proved to be the star on the day in Michael Williams Jr," said Reutemann, "We will need to be more clinical in front of goal and continue to improve defensively as we continue to look for our first clean sheet."

Delhi will now prepare to travel to Utica to play the Pioneers on Wednesday, September 13 at 4 pm for their first road game of the season.
