Castine, ME - The SUNY Delhi lacrosse team was back in action Sunday afternoon, looking to claim their first North Atlantic Conference (NAC) championship in program history, taking on the Mariners of Maritime. It would be a battle of familiar faces, with both sides having gone head-to-head earlier in the season that saw the Mariners getting the best of the Broncos.
Despite being viewed as the underdogs, Delhi would come out ready to play, scoring three goals in the first quarter to take an early 3-0 lead. Fresh off setting the career goals program record, Benjamin Moscatiello would open the scoring less than two minutes in. Kyle Moore would be next, followed by Shane Von Kampen, to give the Broncos some breathing room. Delhi would hold Maine scoreless through the first quarter behind 9 total saves from Jayden Messina. In a back-and-forth second quarter, each side would score four goals of their own. The Broncos would turn to the same three goal scorers to get it done in the second, as Von Kampen would total three first-half goals. Delhi would take a 7-4 lead into the break, 30 minutes away from an NAC championship.
It would be a tale of two halves; with their season hanging in the balance, the Mariners would answer the call. Maine Maritime would rattle off nine unanswered goals, holding the Broncos scoreless in the third. Delhi would make a late run behind a pair of goals from Chris Lazazzaro and another from Jagger Beachak. In the end, the Broncos' comeback attempt would run out of time, coming up short 14-12. Delhi finishes the season 11-5 and 4-1 in conference play and will shift their attention to the offseason as they prepare for next season.
