Cortland, NY - The SUNY Delhi track & field team returned to action this weekend as part of a two-day meet at the Cortland Classic, posting several impressive individual and team performances, including numerous new program records. Records fell in both the men's and women's 4x400 meter relays, as well as the women's 100 meters, 200 meters, 10,000 meters and steeplechase.
On the women's side, Charlotte Warner would continue with her strong rookie campaign, kicking things off in the 3000m steeplechase, taking first overall, and reaching the regional standard with a time of 11:46.19. Warner's time also established a new program record for the event, eclipsing the previous mark of 11:48.23 established by Kelli O'Brien back in 2002. Amelia Bowman-McCoy would make her mark in the 10,000m, finishing third and posting a personal best, and improvement on her school record, with a time of 41:17.92. In the field events portion of the meet, Kitty Messina took first place in the javelin throw with a personal best of 36.53 meters. In the sprints portion of the meet, Bronco athletes continued to have a terrific season. Shaesha Johnson would lead the field in the 100m, taking first with a time of 11.96, shattering the school record shared by Monique Franklin and Miranda Cole. Cole would follow suit in the 200m, earning a new program record with a time of 24.22 while capturing first place. That performance from Cole ranks her as eighth in all of NCAA III for the event. Cole and Johnson then teamed up with Gabrielle Brown and Zoe Rodi to establish another new program record, this time in the 4x400 relay. Their time of 3:58.50 broke the previous school record time of 4:00.57, set back in 2004 by the relay squad of Perry Brown, Nicole Cubero, Dorraine Denton, and Cassiopia Williams.
On the men's side, Michael Lilly would open things up for the Broncos, taking third place in the 3000m steeplechase, recording a time of 10:53.32. Tawakal Omar would continue to build on an impressive first year, taking second place in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.78. In the 400m, Delhi's Neklor Smith and Ryan Swinea would record strong regional standard performances. Smith would take third with a personal best of 48.20, and Swinea would follow in fourth, also posting a personal best of 49.02. In the 100m, Deron Davis captured second place with a time of 10.90, while counterpart Cristhian Cuevas would take third with an 11.00. Davis's day wouldn't end there, recording another top three finish in the 200m with a time of 21.65. In the field events portion, Taehyoung Kim would place second in the triple jump with a 14.04 meter jump. The Broncos made their presence felt in the 4x400, posting second- and fourth-place finishes, both of which reached the regional standard. The relay of Richard Fuller, Neklor Smith, Jamar Matthew, and Ryan Swinea took second, posting a new program record with a time of 3:14.14 and moving to the ninth ranked team in NCAA III. The performance breaks the previous school record time of 3:16.35 established by the relay squad of Antonio Gomes, Romaine Angel, Kevin Williams, and Walter Briggs back in 2015. Delhi's relay dominance would carry over into the 4x100 with a second place from the squad of Tawakal Omar, Marvin Markland, Cristhian Cuevas, and Deron Davis, reaching the regional standard with a time of 41.83.
The Broncos will now shift their attention to performances at Penn Relays and the Vassar Spring Invite in the coming week.
