UTICA, N.Y. (September 1, 2019) – Two quick second-half goals by host Utica put the SUNY Delhi men's soccer team in catchup mode for the remainder of Sunday's contest. Despite a goal by freshman Anthony Cuellar to get the Broncos closer, the equalizer proved to be just out of reach as Delhi suffered a 3-2 road defeat.

The Broncos took an early 1-0 lead at 9:59 off a free kick from Brody Rettle that sailed 25 yards into the net. The Pioneers answered 18 minutes later when Connor McQuillan headed in a corner that entered just inside the left post at 27:12 as the score read an even 1-1 at halftime. Delhi goalkeeper Corey O'Toole finished with ten saves on the day, including coming up with a big penalty-kick save early in the second half to keep the game tied. But it would be Utica who would gain the momentum two-fold on the heels of scores in the 56th and 57th minutes. Tucker Marvin put the hosts in front when his shot from 20 yards out just cleared O'Toole's grasp and into the left side. Utica came knocking again just over a minute-and-a-half later when Jhonny Theze gathered a rebound of an O'Toole save and found the open net at 56:57. Delhi shook off the quick two-goal swing and looked to get back in the game. They got halfway there when Cuellar scored at 71:15 to cut the deficit to 3-2, but could get no closer.

Coupled with their 3-0 defeat Friday in their season-opener at SUNY Potsdam, head coach Brian Mitko's team stands at 0-2 to start the season. They'll look to get in the win column this week when they head down to Pennsylvania to play Clarks Summit on Thursday. The Broncos then begin their home season against Albany College of Pharmacy on Saturday, Sept. 7, followed by a home match versus Bard on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
