Salcedo Breaks 800 Meter Record Again

Katerina Salcedo making a turn on her way to a new school record in the 800 meters.

CHESTER, PA (May 16,2022) - Two more members of the SUNY Delhi Track & Field team got their last chance at a race before the postseason championships take over.  Katerina Salcedo and Seth Bywater made the trip down to Widener College for the Swarthmore Last Chance Meet.  On an evening of wild weather, the meet was constantly changing with limited entries, scratches and weather delays that resulted in races lasting into early Tuesday morning.

Senior Katerina Salcedo continued to set a new standard in the 800 meters.  Salcedo, who first broke the school record as a freshman before having two spring seasons lost to the pandemic, got back to form earlier this season when she lowered the mark again running 2:18.02.  Salcedo ran to fourth place in her heat and 13th place overall in a new school record of 2:16.29.  That mark will now serve as her seed time at the AARTFC Championships this week as she gets one more shot a her own record.  Salcedo now holds SUNY Delhi school records indoors in the 800 and 1,000 meters as well as outdoors in the 800 meters and 4x100 meter relay.

Seth Bywater, who is the second fastest 5,000 meter runner in program history, wanted to take one more shot at breaking the school record set by Kobie Lane in 2019.  With the meet running behind schedule due to the weather, meet management piled 37 men onto the starting line and ran them all in one heat.  In a crowded field, Bywater finished in 15:09.84.  That would be a great time by most standards, but was well short of Bywater's best of 14:41 from the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic.  Bywater will now decide what he wants to race this week at the AARTFC Championships.

The team will now be back in action on Wednesday and Thursday of this week at the AARTFC Championships hosted at Moravian College in Pennsylvania. Representing the men's team will be Naquille Harris, Joshua Jeffes, Seth Bywater and Chris Filatov while the women's team will be represented by Sabrina Richards, Katerina Salcedo, Kitty Messina, Rebecca Heuler and the 400 meter relay team of Richards, Salcedo, Jaylynn Sheppard and Kadie-Ann Whyte.
