School Record Highlights Final Tune-up Before NAC Champs

Owen Sleasman led off the 4x100 meter relay that set a new school record

East Stroudsburg, PA (April 23, 2022) - The Delhi track and field teams were on the road for one last tune-up before hosting next weeks North Atlantic Conference Championships with a trip to East Stroudsburg University for the All-American Invitational.  The meet included numerous strong performances including a new school record in the men's 4x100 meter relay.

The men's 400 meter relay team of Owen Sleasman, Joshua Jeffes, Mickenson Simon and Naquille Harris set a new mark in the event of 42.14 seconds in a winning effor tin the event.  The previous record of 42.54 was held by the team of Rahjel Smith, Antonio Gomes, Romaine Angel and Tyler O'Bryant and was set in 2015 at the NJCAA Region 3 Championship Meet hosted by Delhi.  The realy record is yet another school record credited to Jeffes and Harris.  The women's 400 meter relay team of Kimberly Dean, Katerina Salcedo, Jaylynn Sheppard and Kadie-Ann Whyte also posted a strong performance.  Their time of 49.83 was their first time under 50 seconds this season and was good enough for fourth place overall.  It also marks the fastest relay time for the women since 2019 when the team that also included sheppard ran 49.71 seconds.  

A few of the relay members came back later in the meet with other strong performances.  Simon doubled back from the relay effort to place sixth overall in the 110 high hurdles with a new collegiate best time of 16.13 seconds, Jeffes came back to run to a second place finish in the 400 with a time of 48.83 seconds, and Harris won the 100 and finished second in the 200 meter races with times of 10.81 and 22.38 seconds respectively.  From the women's relay, Whyte came back to place sixth in the 200 meters with a new lifetime best of 26.15 seconds, while Salcedo ran her first sub-60 second 400 placing sixth in 59.85 seconds.  More impressivley was Whyte and Sheppard jumping into the 4x400 meter relay along side Salcedo and Sabrina Richards to run 4:13.80 to place third overall.  For Whyte and Sheppard, this was their first time stepping up to the 400 meter distance this year.

In the field, Kitty Messina continued her rapid improvement in the throws.  She placed sixth overall with a toss of 11.57 meters (37' 11.5"), a mark that now ranks her numbre three in program history.  She also threw a big lifetime best in the discus with a 33.09 meter (108' 7") throw which will also rank her number three in program history.  Both Rebecca Heuler and Messina had big days on the javelin runway as well.  Heuler had yet another lifetime best with a throw of 36.64 meters (120' 2") to place second overall and improve on her number two performance in program history.  Messina completed her big day with a huge lifetime best of 35.80 meters (117' 5") to move to number three in pprogram history in that event as well, placing fourth overall.

Next up for the Broncos is the NAC Championships to be hosted by SUNY Delhi.  The hammer throw will be held at SUNY Oneonta on Saturday April 30 with the remainder of the meet being on the Delhi campus on Sunday May 1, 2022.
