Broncos Post Strong Distance Performances in Last Chance Meet

STATEN ISLAND, NY (February 25, 2022) - A small contingent of the Delhi Track and Field teams headed back to the fast bank of the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex for the Fastrack Last Chance Invitational looking to punch some tickets to the AARTFC Championships next week or finish the season with a strong performance.

In a highly competitive meet, the men's distance runners shined.  Seth Bywater took the overall win in the 5,000 meters with a huge 26 second personal best, running 14:54.14.  Bywater led the race for the first 2,000 meters before getting some help at the front from the field.  However, at the 3200 meter mark, he moved to the front for good.  Teammate, John Amenta also had a big day with his first indoor sub-15 minute performance, running 14:57.38 for a third place finish in the race.  Bywater and Amenta now ranke number two and three in program history for the indoor 5,000.

Aidan Cutting also had a big day with a five second personal best in the mile.  Cutting ran 4:17.93, a time that placed third overall in the meet and now ranks him as the third fastest indoor miler in Delhi's history.

Also running well for the men were Lewis Race and Lorenzo Castro in the 800 meters.  Race ran to a lifetime best of 2:00.12 seconds, narrowly missing his first sub-2 minute performance.  Meanwhile, Castro continued his return to form after taking a year off with a fine 2:01.25 to build on headed into outdoors.

For the women, the duo of sprinters were at it again, this time focussing on the the 200 meters.  Kadie-Ann Whyte continued her incredible improvement dropping another personal best time of 26.44 seconds, dropping another half second.  That time ranks her as number three in program history as well.  Teammate Jaylynn Sheppard ran a season best time in the 200 meters of 27.09 seconds.

Also performing well for the women were a pair of distance runners that posted season bests in the 3,000 meters.  Kristina Messler ran 11:35.13 and Marissa Lombardi ran 11:56.94 to finish off their seasons on a high note.

Next up for the Broncos is a trip to the AARTFC Championships at Nazareth College in Rochester, NY.  Qualified men for Delhi are Naquille Harris (60m, 200m), Joshua Jeffes (200m, 400m, 800m), Aidan Cutting (mile), Seth Bywater (3,000m, 5,000m), John Amenta (5,000m) and Chris Filatov (PV).  For the women, Kadie-Ann Whyte and Jaylynn Sheppard have both qualified in the 60 meter dash.  The meet will be held on March 4-5, 2022.
