Broncos Win Five Events at Utica

UTICA, NY (April 9, 2022) - On a cold spring day that had every type of weather one could imagine, the Delhi track and field team had numerous strong performances.  

On the women's side there were many top finishes including and number of first place finishes.  Senior Katerina Salcedo won the 800 meter run in a time of 2:24.63, more than a second and a half ahead of the runner-up.  Also scoring in the 800 was Kelsey Innes in her first meet of the season.  Her time of 2:38.65 was good for sixth place.  Salcedo also doubled back to place fourth in the 1500 meters with a time of 5:21.19.

Also winning on the track was sophomore Marissa Lomabardi.  Lombardi finally got her first shot at the 10,000 meters in her college career and she took full advantage of it.  Lombardi went straight to the lead and increased her advantage each lap.  By the halfway point, she was nearly a minute clear of the next runner.  Her lap splits were extremely consistent on her way to a finishing time of 43:24.77.  Her time will rank her as number three in program history for the event.

The women's throwing combo of Rebecca Heuler and Kitty Messina had a big day for the Broncos as well.  Heuler and Messina posted a one-two sweep of the javelin throw with marks of 34.87 meters and 30.00 meters respectively.Heuler also placed second in the discus with a toss of 32.96 meters and seventh in the shot put with a mark of 9.69 meters.  Meanwhile Messina was fifth in the discus with a throw of 31.24 meters and third in the shot put with a mark of 11.15 meters.  Heuler who already ranked number two in program history in the discus is now also number two in the javelin as well.  Messina also moved to number five all-time in the shot put with her performance..

Other scoring performances in the meet were turned in by Sabrina Richards in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:16.30, Kristina Messler in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 12:58.73.

For the men, Aidan Cutting took a first place finish in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:04.15 and close behind in third place was Lewis Race in 2:04.88.  Cutting also finished third in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:08.81.  Other points in the distance events came from the steeplechase where senior Bladimir Pena led three Broncos into scoring positiions.  Pena finished in 11:22.58 for fourth place while Allen Lawton placed seventh in 11:51.12 and Caleb Jeralds was eighth in 12:24.65.

The men's 110 meter hurdles was also a big event for Delhi.  Joey Ciufo led the way with a second place finish in 16.64 seconds.  Fifth and sixth place in the race went to Mickenson Simon and Chris Filatov in 17.95 and 18.86 seconds respectively.  Simon and Ciufo also doubled back to the 400 meter hurdles and placed second and fourth respectively with times of 1:07.38 and 1:12.53.  Also scoring on the track was Harry Birchmore in the 400 meters where he placed fifth with a time of 55.28 seconds.

In the field events, Joshua Jeffes won the long jump with a fantastic mark of 6.93 meters (22' 9"), a mark that ranks fifth in program history and qualifies for the All Atlantic Region Track and Field Championships in May.   Chris Filatov recorded a second place finish in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.10 meters.

Both the men and women placed fourth as a team in the 10-team meet.  The Broncos will be in action again next weekend at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic.
