Broncos Win NAC Men'sTitle, Women Second

DELHI, NY (May 1, 2022) - The SUNY Delhi Track and Field teams played host the North Atlantic Conference Championships this weekend on a beautiful day.  The meet marked the return of the meet that last took place in 2019.  The Broncos men retained the title they won in 2019 and the women placed second.

The men's title run included event wins in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters pole vault and 4x400 meter relay and was lead by Joshua Jeffes who was an absolute workhorse.  Jeffes won the 400 meters in a great time of 49.01 seconds and anchored the 4x400 relay to the win with a split of 48.1 seconds.  However, his contribution to the team effort didn't end there.  Jeffes placed second in the 200 meters (22.09), third in the long jump (6.35m), tied for 3rd in the high jump (1.70m) and fourth in the 100 meters (11.47).  Naquille Harris picked up two event wins taking the 100 meters (10.93) and the 200 meters (21.78).  He also ran on the 4x100 relay team that placed third and placed seventh in the shot put.  The final event win for the Bronco men came from Chris Filatov in the pole vault (4.31m).  Filatov also placed second in the javelin throw (42.91) and fourth in the 110 meter high hurdles (17.82).

Other huge contributors included Mickenson Simon, Aidan Cutting and Seth Bywater.  Simon took second place finishes in both the 110 high hurdles (16.19) and 400 hurdles (1:00.01) while placing third in the 100 meters (11.42) and running on the winning 4x400 relay.  Cutting took home second team all conference with runner-up finishes in the 800 meters (1:58.67) and the steeplechase (10:18.53) while adding a fourth place finish in the 5,000 meters (17:02.80).  Bywater had terrific runs in the 1500 meters (4:06.86) and the 5,000 meters (16:08.62) where he finished second in both events.

The women piled up an impressive nine event wins on the day.  Bronco women won the 100, 200, 400, and 800 meter races as well as the steeplechase, shot put, javelin throw and 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays.  Leading the way was Kitty Messina who won the shot put (11.52m), placed second in the hammer throw (34.80m), placed third in the javelin (30.78m) and fourth in the discus (33.84m).  Sabrina Richards had herself a day to remeber.  Richards won the 400 meters (59.49) breaking the 60 second barrier for the first time in her career, then ran another lifetime best to place second in the 200 meters (26.69) while adding wins in both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays.  Senior Katerina Salcedo added a win in the 800 meters (2:24.71) and a second place finish in the 400 meters (59.60) while running on both winning relays as well.  Kadie-Ann Whyte picked up a double victory winning both the 100 meters (12.78) and the 200 meters (26.03) while contributing to the 4x100 relays win.  Rebecca Heuler also had a great day, winning the javelin (35.40m) and placing third in the discus (33.88m) and fourth in the shot put (10.22m).  The final event win came from Kristina Messler who won the 3,000 meter steeplechase (13:32.20) and then came back to place fifth in the 5,000 meters.

Other major contributions came from Jaylynn Sheppard who placed second in the 100 meters (12.80), third in the 200 meters (26.75) and ran on the 4x100 meter relay.  Kelsey Innes ran her first 400 meters of the year placing third (1:03.84) and then came back to place sixth in the 800 meters (2:33.36)and ran on the winning 4x400 meter relay team.  Mary Lyons scored in three different events placing fourth in the 1500 meters (5:38.04), seventh in the 800 meters and jumping in on the 4x400 meter relay tear while Kimberly Dean placed fourth in the 100 meters (13.61), seventh in the 200 meters and seventh in the long jump.  Finally, Marissa Lombardi earned second team all-conference with a second place finish in the 5,000 meters.

The women placed an incredible 13 performances in SUNY Delhi's all-time top 10 for their events!  The highlight of them was the women's 4x100 meter relay of Sabrina Richards, Katerina Salcedo, Jaylynn Sheppard and Kadie-Ann Whyte.  The quartet shattered the school record for the event recording a blazing time of 48.91 seconds.  That performance broke the existing record of 49.41 seconds.

Next up for the Broncos is a little break for final exams before they will head to the Swarthmore Last Chance Meet on May 16th and the All-Atlantic Regional Championships at Moravian on May 18th and 19th.
