Women Reignite Rivalry at SUNY Cobleskill

COBLESKILL, N.Y. (December 4, 2019) – An historic local rivalry heated up again Wednesday evening as the SUNY Delhi women's basketball team traveled to face SUNY Cobleskill, where the host Fighting Tigers took a 91-73 victory. Though the Broncos had four people in double digits in scoring, Cobleskill's Nylasia Sutton roped in 40 points to lead the way as Delhi moved to 1-7 on the season.

Kiera Holland led Delhi with 14 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Camryn McDonald tallied 11 points with five boards. Samiaya Salley totaled ten points with seven assists and six rebounds, while Katelyn Lewis garnered ten points with four rebounds. Diana Echols had a game-high ten boards, while sinking six points. Sam Acuna tallied eight points, as Justine Lubbers recorded six points.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair. The Broncos held a 17-11 lead with 2:50 left in the quarter before Cobleskill finished out the period on a 10-3 run to go up, 21-20, through the opening ten minutes. The Fighting Tigers shot well in the second quarter to pull out ahead, 47-36, at halftime, with Sutton netting ten of her points in the period, including hitting two of her five 3-pointers on the night. Delhi made 38.8 percent shooting (26-for-67), as Cobleskill made 47.2 percent (34-for-72), with Sutton shooting 14-for-23, making 5-of-8 threes and 7-of-8 free throws.

Wednesday's contest marked the first-ever meeting between the former junior-college foes since 2008, during which both programs have made the transition to NCAA Division III. The Broncos and Fighting Tigers will return to a conference rivalry starting next season, as they are set to join the North Atlantic Conference (NAC).  

Head coach Lauren McRoberts' team is back home Thursday night as they face Purchase at 6:00 p.m. They then trek to Alfred University on Saturday to take on the Saxons at 2:00 p.m., then welcome Alfred State Saturday, Dec. 14 at 1:00 p.m. in their last contest prior to break.
