COBLESKILL, N.Y. (April 14, 2021) – The SUNY Delhi softball team completed its two-day, four-game series at SUNY Cobleskill on Wednesday. The Broncos, playing their fourth doubleheader in five days, fell victim to their first sweep of the season as the Fighting Tigers took a 4-1 win in the opener and a 14-6 five-inning decision in the latter. Delhi stands at 7-3 (5-3 NAC West) with a home weekend series with conference-foe Cazenovia Saturday and Sunday.

GAME ONE: COBLESKILL 4, DELHI 1

The Broncos struck first in the third when Mackenzie Sparacino reached first on a two-out throwing error by the shortstop, allowing Jessica Kwasnik to score. The Fighting Tigers responded in the bottom half on a two-out, two-RBI single by Megan Gilligan to go back out in front. They added to their score one inning later off Edyliese Aquino's solo homer, then another in the fifth on a Gilligan sacrifice fly. Although Delhi connected well at the plate, Cobleskill's fielders found themselves in the right place at the right time to back a one-hit, seven-inning performance by pitcher Victoria Decker. Dakota Baker had the Broncos' lone hit with a single in the fifth. Starter Mel Papuli went 5.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Katelynn Rose pitched the remaining 0.2, posting one strikeout.

GAME TWO: COBLESKILL 14, DELHI 6

Delhi hoped to recapture its second-game fortunes they experienced Tuesday, opening the game with a three-run first. Carissa Crandall began the scoring with a RBI single, while Kayla Beers provided a bases-loaded, two-RBI single. But any good feelings were dashed when Cobleskill batted around the lineup and then some in the bottom half for a nine-run first. The Broncos got one back the next frame when Jaylynn Sheppard stole home on a double-steal ploy, only for Cobleskill to maintain its advantage after scoring on a passed ball. Pitcher Katelynn Rose settled down to shut out the Fighting Tigers the next two innings and provided the team's next two runs with a sacrifice fly in the third and a fifth-inning RBI single as the Broncos trailed 10-6. But Cobleskill's Jillian Nitchman broke the game open with a three-run homer in the fifth, followed by an ensuing wild pitch to bring across the Fighting Tigers' 14th run to press the eight-run rule.

Rose batted 1-for-2 with two RBIs and pitched five innings, allowing 12 earned runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts. Beers went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, while Mel Papuli went 3-for-3 with one double. Sheppard had one stolen base with her steal home.
