Coach Spotlight: Meagan Hillard, Softball

coach talking to players

DELHI, N.Y. (September 3, 2020) - Our coaches have been nothing short of extraordinary during this adverse time that all colleges are facing with regards to athletics. While hopes of a championship are far from view, the determination to still provide students a welcoming, active experience this year has not left our coaches' eyes. SUNY Delhi Athletics celebrates our coaches where we'll learn about our talented staff in three phases: before, during, and after SUNY Delhi.

Meagan Hillard's odyssey to the softball head coaching position at SUNY Delhi came with many twists and turns, but the payoff has been met. It was not until moving to the area where Hillard was introduced to SUNY Delhi and its softball program. When the job became available in the fall of 2018, Hillard jumped at the chance. She inherited a team that went winless the year prior, and despite carrying a roster of 13 entering that spring, the Broncos charted 11 wins for their first double-digit win season since 2016. They amassed three doubleheader sweeps, two of which versus conference opponents, six all-conference selections, and one USCAA All-American. The Delhi women played ten games in 2020 before their season was interrupted. This included a doubleheader sweep of eventual conference opponent NVU Lyndon and an eight-game trip in Florida. The 2021 season will mark SUNY Delhi softball's first season in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) as the program readies for full-time NCAA membership and an opportunity to compete in the NCAA national tournament.

BEFORE... Growing up and playing collegiate softball in Northwestern Pennsylvania, I did not know much about the SUNY system in general. Once I moved to this area and saw that the softball position was open, that is when I learned about the college and the program.

DURING... This year is my third season as the head coach for the softball team. The year before I was hired the softball program was 0-27. My goal from this was to make the softball team competitive and they answered the call. The softball team's record my first year was 11-15, and the team was awarded with six All-ACAA awards, one ACAA All-Tournament and one USCAA All American. Academically the softball team has maintained a 3.3 GPA over the course of the last three semesters.

AFTER... I want to help guide the softball program to a conference title and to compete in the NCAA tournament. Academically, I want to keep guiding student athletes to succeed in their field of study. I would also love to grow the alumni presence of past SUNY Delhi softball alums and learn more about the previous softball teams.
