DELHI, N.Y. (March 2, 2021) - The SUNY Delhi Athletics Broncos of the Week takes on a new meaning! We are excited to collaborate with our community to highlight our local student-athletes, and turning to our Broncos who have excelled academically. Each week we will showcase our Broncos through "Nate Lull's Local Look" and our "Scholar Athlete Student Spotlight."

Nate Lull's Local Look: Nick Dower, Men's Lacrosse (Oneonta, NY / Oneonta)

WCDO Sports Director Nate Lull is based in Sidney, NY and reports on high school sports in the counties that surround SUNY Delhi. Many of the athletes Nate covers continue their sports careers by joining the Bronco family. Each week Nate will highlight a local player he covered in high school who is now in college at Delhi.

This week Nate has selected Nick Dower from Men's Lacrosse. Nick is a native of Oneonta, NY.

Nate says: "While lacrosse isn't a huge sport in my coverage area of Section IV, I always try to make sure I catch a few Oneonta High School games each spring. They have turned out some exceptional players and Nick Dower is certainly one of them. Nick was a talented face off player at OHS. He was also a key part of the Jackets offense. He is a quick and shifty player that is now succeeding at the next level at SUNY Delhi. I think the future is bright for Nick and the Broncos program. During his freshman season in 2019, Dower was named First Team All-NAC and All-NAC Tournament as the Broncos totaled 11 wins and a conference playoff berth. He topped the NAC winning 235 faceoffs on 371 attempts, as well as scooping up a league-high 162 total ground balls."

Check back next week for another one of Nate's picks!

Scholar Athlete Student Spotlight: Rachael Scoones, Softball/Soccer (Waterville, NY / Waterville)

Junior Rachael Scoones is in her third season on both the softball and women's soccer programs. Originally a Veterinary Science major, Rachael switched over to Recreation & Sports Management her freshman year and harbors the highest cumulative GPA among returning softball student-athletes. Rachael is involved in many facets surrounding SUNY Delhi Athletics, including as Secretary for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She was recently elected to serve as the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) representative on the NCAA Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, with her term set to begin September 1. The softball outfielder and soccer goalie's accolades have included academic honors from the NAC, ACAA, and USCAA, a SUNY Delhi Scholar-Athlete, and during the 2019 soccer season was chosen as the NAC Defensive Player of the Week and USCAA Goalie of the Week in the same week. On a personal level, Scoones attended a Beyond Sports effort in Costa Rica last summer. In what would be a life-changing experience, Scoones assisted with Special Olympics events and spent the week teaching physical education and movement classes in local schools. She says this experience solidified her career path.
