William Stephens III named as SUNY Delhi’s Swimming and Diving Head Coach

Director of Athletics Bob Backus has officially announced the appointment of William Stephens III as Head Coach of the SUNY Delhi men's and women’s swimming and diving programs. Stephens comes to Delhi after serving as an assistant coach at SUNY Potsdam.

"As the Director of Athletics, I'd like to welcome William Stephens to our Delhi community and the Broncos coaching staff as our Head Swimming and Diving Coach,” said Backus, “I'm confident that he will guide the Broncos swimming and diving program to future success in the North Atlantic Conference, Go Broncos!"

"It has been a dream of mine to become a head swimming and diving coach, and through hard work and dedication I have made that dream a reality. I am ecstatic to become the next head coach for the men's and women's swimming and diving team at SUNY Delhi,” said Stephens, “I would like to thank Bob Backus and the rest of the committee for selecting me for the position. I cannot wait to make an impact at Delhi and create a culture that supports academic and athletic success for the team. I’m excited to be a Bronco, let's get to work!"

Coach Stephens comes to Delhi after one year as an assistant coach for SUNY Potsdam’s Swimming and Diving Team. The combination of his collegiate swimming background and coaching experience will allow him to specialize in sprint events while growing the entire program.

This past year Coach Stephens had two swimmers reach the finals at the SUNYAC Championships and had one diver reach an NCAA Division III national qualifying score. Before assisting at Potsdam, he worked at Northern TRIBS in both Massena and Potsdam, where he coached all age groups from young children to high school athletes.

As a collegiate athlete, Stephens was a top freestyler and butterflier on the Potsdam Bear’s swim teams for his sophomore and junior year. He specialized in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, and 100 butterfly. He was selected as captain in his junior year before his senior year was unfortunately shut down.

Coach Stephens earned a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies and Criminal Justice, with a minor in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) from SUNY Potsdam in 2021. He is currently completing his master’s online at Oregon State University in Environmental Science and Wildlife Management. He is originally from Medina, New York.
