DELHI, N.Y. (September 10, 2021) – An 88th-minute goal by freshman Michael Williams Jr. was the SUNY Delhi's men's soccer team's payoff after fighting all second half to tie SUNY Potsdam in a 1-1 result Friday afternoon. The Broncos fell one goal behind late in the first half, following a similar theme from their first two matches, but kept battling to stay out of the loss column and move to 0-2-1.

The Bears struck first in the initial frame with 2:04 to go until half as goalie Connor Callan booted one of his many free kicks from behind midfield, with a waiting Raymond Jones there to head it in on the fly. Potsdam had plenty of other chances to build to its lead, with 17 total shots in regulation, including 14 in the opening half. Delhi goalie Jonathan Walch made it stand with a nine-save showing to keep the green and gold in the game.

Momentum started to pick up for the Broncos late in the game, as it had in their past two matchups. Freshman Caleb Carpenter, known for his long-range throw-ins, triggered a long feed from the sideline to the front of the goal, where it bounced off the head of Brody Rettle and at the left foot of Williams, who beat keeper Connor Callan cleanly to knot it up with 2:26 remaining in regulation.

Despite playing a pair of overtime frames, the golden goal could not be found as the game wrapped up a 1-1 tie. Walch took his 110-minute performance between the pipes to 0-2-1 on the season.

"It was a great overall team effort today," said head coach EJ Reutemann. "We needed every ounce of energy and focus to stay in the game, tie it up and get to overtime. It was a true college soccer game that showed a lot of players coming into their own with breakout performances. We are looking to build off this momentum heading into the next match."

The draw moves SUNY Delhi in the right direction towards its first win of the 2021 season. The next chance they have is this Sunday, Sept. 12 at Morrisville State at 1:00 p.m. Live links are available at delhibroncos.com.
