Delhi Enters NAC Tournament as 1-seed, Late Goal By Mariners Downs Broncos

Marcy, NY (April 29, 2002) --- It was a familar scenario for SUNY Delhi athletics: the 4th program to claim the 1-seed entering a conference tournament and reach the NAC semi-finals. It was also a familar scenario where the Broncos weren't able to host their tournament game; having to travel to SUNY Poly. It was similar to what happened with women's soccer in the fall. Unfortunately, like the previous three programs before them, the Broncos lacrosse program would fail in the quest to reach the conference championship game. The 4th-seeded Maine Maritime would eventually pull out a 12-11 thriller.

It was a 2-goal cushion for the Mariners after the first period. Jackson Murphy would score first for Delhi but 3 straight Maine Maritime goals would follow. Murphy would score again with under 3 minutes in the opening period but the Mariners reclaimed a 2-goal lead less than a minute later.

Benjamin Moscatiello got on the board for Delhi to begin the second fifteen minutes. The teams would cancel each other out with two goals each. Nick Dower and Murphy would get the goals for Delhi. A Mariner goal was followed by a Nico Rivera goal and the Broncos would only trail by 1 at halftime, 7-6.

The third period would be the lowest scoring period of the evening. Mariner goals started and concluded the period with Greg Junge and Moscatiello scoring in the middle. It would still be Maine Maritime's lead after 3.

The excitement was kicked up a bit in the final period. Brandon McGrath scored first and was followed by Dower's second goal of the evening. The Broncos now led 10 to 9. But the lead only lasted for two minutes. The Mariners would score the next two and reclaim their lead. The clock continued to creep towards the end and with 60 seconds left, Moscatiello would tie it up again for the Broncos. Just as things looked to possibly be headed to an overtime period, the Mariners would strike one last time with only 13 seconds left on the scoreboard. It wouldn't be enough for the 1-seeded Broncos to find another tying goal.

Moscatiello and Junge led the Broncos with 8 shots each. Dower scooped 14 ground balls to lead both teams.

Samuel Steng would make 10 saves in net for Delhi.

The Broncos conclude their season at 8-7 overall.
