STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (February 28, 2020) – Two new school records, several PR's to land in the all-time school rankings, and one new AARTFC qualifier was how the SUNY Delhi track and field teams performed to complete their indoor regular season at the Ocean Breeze Last Chance Meet. Runner Katerina Salcedo broke her own school record in the 800 meters with an AARTFC-qualifying time of 2:19.73. Her previous best was 2:20.44, which she set last season at Ithaca.
Running phenom Abshir Yerow, who already qualified for regionals in the 3,000 meters, broke the school record in the event with a time of 8:29.48. He beat out his former teammate Kobie Lane's school standard, which he set also set at Ocean Breeze in 2017.
Huphrey Banful, who punched his AARTFC ticket earlier this season in the 60-meter hurdles, ran a huge personal best of 8.46 in the finals Friday to rank third all-time in the school record books. Freshman runner Aidan Cutting ran a PR of 4:22.43 in the one-mile run for sixth all-time at SUNY Delhi.
Ten Broncos have qualified for the AARTFC Indoor Championships across 12 events, set for Friday, Mar. 6 and Saturday, Mar. 7 at Nazareth College. Head coach Robb Munro's team's first year in the regional championships last season saw Salcedo and Glenn Butler earn podium finishes in the 800 meters and high jump, respectively. Butler will be seen in two events at the AARTFC Championships: the long jump and the high jump.
Yerow broke a pair of indoor school records this season in the 3,000 meters and the 5,000 meters. Interestingly enough, Yerow set the indoor 5K record at Delhi's first stop at Ocean Breeze on January 17. He qualified for AARTFC's in both events.
