STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (January 17, 2020) – The SUNY Delhi track and field team's day at the Ocean Breeze New York City Gotham Cup was bolstered by a pair of school records being broken. Distance runner Abshir Yerow added to his pedigree by breaking the school mark in the 5,000 meters with a first-place time of 14:56.22. Jumper Glenn Butler took hold of the college long jump, finishing first with a measure of 7.33m.
Yerow bested the previous mark of 14:59.92, set by former teammate Nicholas Arnecke at another coveted New York venue, the New York City Armory, in 2017. Butler surpassed the prior standard of 7.25m by Doug Williams at Cornell in 2017, with his jump standing as the second best in all NCAA Division III this season. Both Broncos' marks qualified them for the AARTFC Championships in March. Butler also earned a regional spot Friday in the high jump, clearing 1.89m for fourth place.
Fellow jumper Alex Irving, who had already qualified for AARTFC's in the triple jump, set an indoor personal best with a measure of 13.82m, good for fourth place. He also leaped to 6.15m in the long jump.
The Broncos have already broken four school records just two meets into their season. After setting a new standard of 13:19.21 at Cornell in December, the distance medley relay team of Arielle Moheimani, Ashley Magnifico, Katerina Salcedo, and Sophie Stewart followed up with a run of 13:37.70 Friday for fifth place. Akilah Sanders, who threw for a new shot put record of 12.04m in the season opener, followed up at 11.85m for 11th place.
Head coach Robb Munro's team is back in action next Saturday, Jan. 25, returning to Cornell for the Upstate Challenge.
