Softball Splits Doubleheader, Holds Steady at .500 on the Season

Houghton, NY - The SUNY Delhi softball team was back in action this weekend for an afternoon doubleheader against Houghton University.

In game one, the Highlanders would strike first, plating 4 runs in the first inning to take a commanding early lead. The Broncos continue to prove that no deficit is too large, responding with 8 runs in the top of the second inning. Sophomore Cayla Moroni would bring in the first Delhi run of the game with a bases-loaded walk, while first-year Samantha Martin and sophomore Jaden Taylor would cap off the inning with RBI singles to give the Broncos a 4-run lead. Houghton would keep things close, scoring two runs to cut the deficit to just two entering the final inning of play. Sophomore Hannah Caughey would add an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI single, as sophomore Angelina Dickel picked up the complete game victory as the Broncos would hold on for the 9-7 victory.

In game two, the Highlanders would start fast again, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead after just the first inning. The Broncos would claw back in the third inning behind a two-run home run from first-year Stephanie Huckabee, cutting the lead to 3-2. Destined for a different outcome this time around, Houghton would have an answer of their own, plating 4 unanswered runs. Delhi, looking to have one last comeback attempt, would cut the lead to just one again following RBI singles from sophomore's Jaden Taylor and Kayleigh Allen. In the end, Houghton would add additional runs in the final frames to secure the victory.

The Broncos split on the day, moving to 6-6 on the year, and will take on Skidmore for an away doubleheader on March 28th.
