Brian Mitko Tapped as Head Men's Soccer Coach

DELHI, N.Y. (August 2, 2017) – SUNY Delhi director of athletics Bob Backus has announced Brian Mitko as the school’s new men’s soccer head coach. Mitko comes to Delhi after a two-year stint as the assistant coach at Vermont. A 2013 graduate of Skidmore, where he was both a four-year soccer and lacrosse letter-winner, this is Mitko’s first college head coaching position. He takes over for Doug McKee, who stepped down this summer to take a teaching position with the college.

“We’re real excited to have a coach with Brian’s kind of competitive playing and coaching experience on staff,” related Backus. “We were very pleased with the turnout of our search, and we are confident Brian will build upon a solid foundation for our men’s soccer team.”

About Brian Mitko:

“I’m very excited for this opportunity Bob and his staff have given me. I just wanted to thank all my mentors and I’m looking forward to this first season. I can’t wait to get started.”

In his two years at Vermont, Mitko helped lead the Catamounts to back-to-back NCAA Division I Tournament appearances, including an America East championship in 2015. The Catamounts compiled a 25-14-4 record over those two seasons.

Mitko also spent one season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the men's soccer program at Bard College in New York. Mitko was responsible for Bard's 2014 recruiting class, created drills for training sessions, monitored student-athlete's academic performance, and prepared scouting reports on opponents.

Mitko graduated from Skidmore College in 2013, earning a bachelor's degree in exercise science. He was a four-year member of the men's soccer and lacrosse teams, earning eight varsity letters. Mitko was a two-year captain of the men's soccer team and as a senior he was named the ECAC Defenseman of the Week twice and Liberty League Defensive Player of the Week four times.

A native of Clinton, Connecticut, Mitko was also the head coach of the FC Dutchmen Premier team in Albany, New York and has coached at several camps and clinics, including the several at Bard and the Mike Noonan Soccer Camp at Clemson.
