Seven Broncos Score in Season-Opening Win at Davis

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (August 30, 2017) – The Brian Mitko era for SUNY Delhi men's soccer got off to a resounding start on Wednesday afternoon, as seven Broncos scored goals in a 7-1 rout at Davis to open the 2017 season. It marked the first career head-coaching win for Mitko, who was hired as head coach over the summer.

SUNY Delhi scored the first six goals of the contest, and led 3-0 at halftime. David Vasquez wasted no time, as his score off a throw-in from Griffin Metzo gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead just 51 seconds into the contest. Joseph Vazquez gave the Broncos their second score eight minutes later with a turn-around shot that found the left side of the net. Alhasane Sako finished out the first-half scoring, executing a feed from Vasquez from the right side to bury a shot from the top of the box. That gave the Broncos a 3-0 lead 14:36 into the match.

Matthew Cassidy continued the scoring in the second half, coming through on an open shot from the top of the box in the 53rd minute for a 4-0 Delhi advantage. Joseph O'Halloran and Jacob Zinkievich then supplied two quick goals in the 63rd and 64th minute, respectively, as the Broncos led, 6-0. Zinkievich's score came off a corner kick. Davis got on the board after an  Austin Mousseau goal in the 70th minute, but SUNY Delhi answered right back when Christian Quinde tallied the final score after a key pass from Tim Sogbodjor in the 73rd minute.

Goalkeepers Marcos Andrino and Corey O'Toole split halves in net, with Andrino picking up the win and collecting one save. SUNY Delhi outshot Davis, 20-4, with 12 shots on goal. The Broncos also had 13 corner kicks to the Falcons' one.

The men are back in action on Friday, when they travel to face Alfred State at 7:00 p.m.
