Men's Lacrosse suffers last minute defeat to Maine Maritime

Castine, ME - The Delhi men's lacrosse team traveled up to play North Atlantic Conference opponents Maine Maritime for the first game of a two-game road trip, losing in the final minutes 11-10. They slide to second in the NAC standings with their first conference loss of the season.

Despite the late-game comeback the Broncos (3-6,2-1) performed well throughout the night, leading in total shots (43), ground balls (39), clears (34) and caused turnovers (20).

How it Happened:

Just under two minutes into the action, senior captain Sean Dalton got the Broncos started with the game's first goal, capping off a perfect setup by Chris Lazazzaro. It would lead to a largely positive first half for Delhi as they went on to lead 7-2 before the Mariners brought it to 7-4 before the half. The Delhi defense had an impressive 30 minutes, picking up 22 ground balls and forcing 12 turnovers.

Sophomore Mario Simmons Jr. and freshman Jagger Beachak both scored a pair of back-to-back goals which included Simmons Jr.'s first points of the season. Lazazzaro played a significant role in the attack, especially on the transition with the Broncos only two assists of the half.

The second half kicked off and the green and gold struck first again, this time with a Lazzazzaro goal off a Brandon McGrath assist. Maine Maritime would score four in the third but the Delhi attack continued to keep up the relentless pressure with Nico Rivera and Dalton both scoring to maintain a 10-8 lead.

As it began to pour down in the fourth, Maine would take an 11-10 lead until an incredible Kyle Brogan solo goal tied the game with 5:16 left. It would be Maritime to grab the decided points with 2:28 on the clock, handing the Broncos their first conference loss of the season.

Anthony Ferrato and Donavon Johnson Moline were solid on the defensive side with Ferrato picking up a season-high 10 ground balls and Moline causing the team-high four turnovers.

Delhi will move on to their second game of the road trip against Husson University on April 2nd at 12:00 PM.
