Delhi falls to Elmira at home in five set battle

Delhi, NY – Women's Volleyball hosted Elmira College Tuesday evening in a closely contested five-set battle, ultimately falling 2-3. Three Broncos combined for a total of 31 kills in their first five-set match of the year.

THE BASICS

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW  

  • In the first set, the Broncos battled back and forth with the Eagles until halfway through when Elmira closed it on a 14-2 run. 

  • Delhi immediately rebounded in the second set, doubling their kill total from the first set with 12 kills and improving their hitting percentage from -.074 to .242%. Seniors Chloe Elsenbeck (New Hartford, NY) and Sage Renneisen (Blue Point, NY) combined for eight of the team's kills. 

  • In the third set, the Broncos found themselves trailing early, 14-7, before making a significant comeback to take a 24-22 lead. Despite recording 11 team kills, including four from Renneisen, they would lose the set 28-26.  

  • Delhi would be tied 10-10 in the fourth set before going on a 15-8 run to win the frame. Senior Katelyn Babcock (Monticello, NY) and Elsenbeck combined for 12 serves during that run, forcing a fifth set. 

  • In the fifth set, the match was tied at 10-10 again after a back-and-forth start. Elmira would then close it out with the help of two service aces in the final stretch. 

  • Freshman Madelyn Diep (Baldwinsville, NY) had an outstanding defensive day in the libero position, setting a team record for digs with 25, 34 receptions at a rate of .944%, and serving 15 times. 

  • Three Broncos recorded double-digit kills for the first time this season, with Renneisen ending with 11, and Elsenbeck and senior Stephanie Burke (West Winfield, NY) both contributing 10. Burke and Babcock also had three blocks each.
