Broncos split home tri-match against Nazarene and Poly on Senior Day

Delhi, NY – Women's volleyball hosted conference opponents Eastern Nazarene and SUNY Poly on Sunday for a North Atlantic Conference tri-match. The Broncos wrapped up their regular season with a three-set loss to Nazarene before defeating the Wildcats in three sets. With the win and draw, Delhi finishes at 5-5 in the North Atlantic Conference, locking up their spot in the NAC playoffs next weekend.  

THE BASICS GAME ONE 

Score: SUNY Delhi Broncos 0 | Eastern Nazarene Lions 3 (12-25, 6-25, 17-25) 

Records: SUNY Delhi (6-16, 4-5) | Eastern Nazarene (22-2,9-0) 

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

  • Eastern Nazarene took the first set, doubling the Broncos' kill total 8-4. After losing the second set, the Broncos put up more of a fight in the third, reaching a 10-10 tie before ultimately being defeated. 

  • Senior Sage Renneisen, freshman Finley Benn, and 5th-year player Chloe Elsenbeck led with three kills each. Meanwhile, freshman Madelyn Diep collected 15 digs and 14 service receptions. 

THE BASICS GAME TWO 

Score: SUNY Delhi Broncos 3 |SUNY Poly Wildcats 0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-19) 

Records: SUNY Delhi (7-16, 5-5) | SUNY Poly (2-22, 0-9) 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Before the match, Delhi's three graduating seniors, Stephanie Burke, Sage Renneisen, and Gianna Militi, were honored in their final match at Floyd L. Maines Arena with a special recognition. 

  • Senior Stephanie Burke, who had recently suffered a season-ending injury, served the first point in what would be her final ace in the green and gold. The moment served as a heartfelt goodbye to an incredible four-year student-athlete, honored by opponents SUNY Poly. 

  •  The first set was tight until the Broncos pulled away, leading 11-10 and going on an 11-1 scoring run, thanks to excellent serving runs from Elsenbeck and Diep. Benn recorded the set-high four kills with a .200 hitting percentage. 

  •  Delhi grabbed an early lead in the second set and never let it slip. Senior Katelyn Babcock's six consecutive serves helped the Broncos extend their lead with a six-point scoring streak, making it 18-10. They then closed the set, scoring the last five points, aided by four serves from freshman Natalie Bulmahn. Renneisen led the set with six kills on an excellent .556 hitting percentage. 

  • In the final set, the Wildcats held a 19-15 lead before Babcock started her serve, scoring the last 10 points of the match with two aces. 

  • Renneisen, in her senior match, led with the match-high 11 kills as Delhi outperformed Poly with 35 kills to their 15. Elsenbeck wrapped up the second match with nine kills, including three of the team's nine service aces. 

UP NEXT FOR THE BRONCOS

After finishing with a 5-5 record in the NAC West, Delhi Women's Volleyball ended up tied in the standings with SUNY Cobleskill. The tie-breaker came down to the teams' records against similar non-conference opponents, with the Tigers coming out on top. As a result, the Broncos will be the fourth seed going into the NAC playoffs next weekend, starting on Saturday, November 4th, at Eastern Nazarene.
