2022-23 Women's Basketball Preview

The SUNY Delhi Women's Basketball program gets ready for a big year after a tough previous season. The Broncos are forming a new identity under head coach Aiden McRoberts in their fourth year at the helm of the program.

"The 22-23 season is going to be an important season for the growth of this program," said head coach Mcroberts, " With one lone senior, we have a very young and eager group of players who are ready to put the program on the map."

The program dealt with issues in the 2021-22 season, at times running with a six-man rotation. But with a reformed group and plenty of optimism the Bronco look to turn it around and have a solid season.

They have welcomed in 10 new faces who will look to step up and fill big roles on the team, including eight freshman newcomers and one transfer. Top newcomers feature Aniya Jones who will be a multi-sport athlete for Delhi, running track and playing ball. Also, junior transfer Jayda Allen looks to secure a starting spot in her first year with the Broncos. Other standout newcomers include freshman Francesca Vassilakos, Ma'Kira Busnie and Jenna Lubbers to mix in with the six returning Broncos.

The returning Broncos are led by junior Angelica Lazo and seniors Myles Matthias and Justine Lubbers. Lazo led the team with 14.1 points per game last year, while Lubbers was very dependable starting all 20 games. They are joined by Nicole Bryant, Jahddah Lennon and Juana Severino who are all returning as well and will look to make an impact.

The Green and Gold will look to blend their mix of experience and youth this season after placing last in the NAC. They have a solid non-conference schedule coming up with notable games being against Hartwick College, Mitchell College, RPI and Utica. While they kick off NAC play on January 13th against Northern Vermont-Lyndon. That game marks the start of a five-game home stand for Delhi, ending with a big game against SUNY Cobleskill on January 28th. The Broncos will finish their season with a home stand against NAC opponents SUNY Canton and NVU-Johnson on February 10th and 11th.

"The last few weeks of practice have been intense, and we have been learning a lot about each other in order to figure out what will work best for the program," said coach McRoberts, "Overall, I am very excited to see what this young squad can bring to the table."

The Broncos kick off their season with their home opener against Houghton on November 8th at 7 p.m. for Blackout Night. There will also be a drawing for a big prize if you attended wearing black and bring a non-perishable item.
