Broncos stumble on the road at Castleton despite 30-point night from McCarthy

Castleton, VT – SUNY Delhi Men's Basketball took on VTSU Castleton on the road late Saturday night and were defeated 78-73 in a tough battle. 

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

  • Delhi started the game by outscoring the Spartans 14-6, aided by two three-pointers from junior Lester McCarthy (Dobbs Ferry, NY) and sophomore Noah Collin (Spring Valley, NY) to get them going.  

  • The Broncos held a single-digit lead late into the half until Castleton took a 30-27 lead with 4:37 left to play. The Spartans extended their lead to seven before McCarthy finished the half, scoring the last four points to bring the deficit to 35-38.  

  • McCarthy's nine points were the team-high at the half. Senior Marven Louissaint (Brooklyn, NY) was active on the boards, securing seven rebounds with six points as they outrebounded the home team on both defense and offense. 

  • After going back and forth in the second half, Castleton stretched their lead to eight points about halfway through. They then pushed it to double digits, leading 66-56 with 6:05 remaining. 

  •  Led by two big plays from sophomore Gustarling Louis (Elmont, NY) and three three-pointers from Delhi, the Broncos fought back into the game with an 11-3 scoring run in the final four minutes.  

  • Delhi continued to battle down the stretch, with McCarthy scoring 21 points in the second half but eventually fell for the first time this season. 

  • McCarthy finished with 30 points with five made threes, a career-high in a superb bounce-back effort. He shot 55.6% (10/18) from the field and 45.5% (5/11) from deep. Louissaint ended with a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double, while Louis added 12 points.
