DELHI, N.Y. (May 10, 2019) – Just weeks after a SUNY Delhi student-athlete received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence, the Broncos were not quite done earning praise from the state office in Albany. Men's track and field senior Matthew Scavetta (Livingston, NJ / Livingston) and men's tennis sophomore Jake Robinson (Oneonta, NY / Oneonta) were recently named recipients of the SUNY Chancellor's Scholar Athlete Award for their tremendous commitments as student-athletes.
Scavetta, soon to graduate with a degree in Construction Management with a 3.42 GPA, and Robinson, a Recreation and Sports Management major with a 3.93 GPA, were formally recognized in a ceremony Friday in SUNY Delhi President Dr. Michael R. Laliberte's office. President Dr. Laliberte, Vice President for Student Life Dr. Tomas Aguirre, Associate Athletics Director Cathy Foto, and head coaches Robb Munro and Brian Mitko were on hand to present the two with their awards. Scavetta and Robinson became the latest SUNY Delhi student-athletes to earn honors from SUNY, following women's cross country runner Elise McIntyre receiving the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence in April.
The SUNY Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award is the highest award given to a student-athlete in the State University of New York. The award recognizes a combination of outstanding academic excellence and superior athletic achievement. In order to be considered for this award, student-athletes were nominated by their athletic director. Nominees then had their academic credentials and athletic accomplishments reviewed by athletic directors from across the State University system.
Scavetta wrapped up a stellar four-year career for Coach Munro, becoming a two-time NAC champion in the pole vault. As a junior, the Livingston, NJ native broke the outdoor school record with a height of 4.43m at the 2018 SUNY Cortland Classic. He won back-to-back conference titles clearing 4.10m in 2018 and 4.20 just a few weeks ago at the 2019 meet to help the men to a team title. In the Broncos' 2019 regular-season finale Thursday at West Point, Scavetta finished his career clearing a season-best 4.31m.
Robinson completed his first year on the tennis team with a 4-7 singles record and 5-4 overall doubles record. His efforts guided the Broncos to the NAC Tournament, where the Oneonta, NY native provided the deciding win at six singles in Delhi's 5-4 semifinals victory over MCLA, as the team finished runners-up.
