Men's Soccer Beats Fisher, One Win Away from Potential USCAA Berth

DELHI, N.Y. (October 21, 2017) – The SUNY Delhi men's soccer team rallied around a pair of early second-half strikes against Fisher on Saturday and held off a late Falcons rally to pull out a 2-1 home NIAC win. The win put the Broncos back at .500 with a 7-7 record, and can strengthen their hopes for a USCAA National Tournament appearance with a win over Berkeley NY in their regular season finale at home on Wednesday, October 25 at 2:30 p.m.

Despite Delhi outshooting Fisher, 6-2, in the first half, the match was scoreless at halftime. Brody Rettle got the Broncos on the board in the 52nd minute off an assist from Alhasane Sako, his first of the year, for the 1-0 lead. Sako followed suit in minute 66, scoring his team-best sixth goal of the season off a cross from Jostin Sarmiento to put Delhi up by two. The Broncos' lead was contested after Falcon Matthew Miller's penalty kick goal in the 73rd minute cut the score to 2-1. In a hard-fought battle the rest of the way, Delhi survived several close calls to walk out with the one-goal NIAC victory.

Goalkeeper Marcos Andrino finished with three saves on the day, while the Broncos finished the match with a 16-8 advantage in shots and 10-3 in shots on goal. Sako's three points on the day lifted his team-best scoring total this season to 13 points on six goals and one assist. Rettle and Matthew Cassidy each had three shots on goal to lead Delhi. The Broncos were called on 18 fouls to the Falcons' ten, with no cards given out.
