Five Honored to All-NIAC, All-Tourney as Men's Soccer Falls to Maine Fort Kent in NIAC Finals

MEDFORD, Mass. (November 5, 2017) – The sun may have set on the SUNY Delhi men's soccer season on Sunday, but it ended where the Broncos would have preferred it end at: the NIAC Championship. After blanking Fisher, 4-0, in Saturday's semifinals, Delhi faced Maine Fort Kent for the league title, only to fall to the Bengals by an 8-0 ledger.

Following Sunday's match, the conference honored its All-NIAC and All-Tournament teams. Alhasane Sako and Marcos Andrino were named to the All-NIAC First Team, while Matthew Cassidy, Brody Rettle and Joe O'Halloran received honorable mentions. O'Halloran, Cassidy and Sako were accorded to the All-Tournament Team.

Andrino finished Sunday's contest with a season-high 15 saves and allowed six goals before Corey O'Toole came in and had five saves and surrendered two goals in less than 30 minutes of action. The Broncos finished with 14 shots and 11 shots on goal, while Maine Fort Kent had 42 shots and 28 shots on goal. Austin Hutchins, Griffin Metzko and David Vasquez each had two shots on goal to lead Delhi. The Bengals' Mark Parchment tallied a hat trick with one assist, while Odean Irons, James Hone-Blanchet, Kimar Smith, Comar Pascoe and Shawn Genus had the remaining scores. Yellow cards were called on Delhi's Rommernio Morris and Ayooluwatomi Salim.

SUNY Delhi concluded the 2017 season with a 9-8 record. In his first year as head coach, Brian Mitko was tasked with replacing several key players from Delhi's 2016 squad that finished 12-6 and reached the USCAA Tournament. With several injuries threatening to play spoiler, and the Broncos staring at a 4-6 record, Mitko and assistant coach Andy Ringler kept their young team focused as they rallied to win five of their last seven contests to end the year above .500. Their 20 combined goals in those wins were more than what they had scored all season up to that point.
