Broncos Flip the Script on the Roos; Delhi Finishes Road Trip With a Win

CANTON, NY (April 30, 2022) --- The SUNY Delhi softball team finished up their road trip to SUNY Canton with a victory on Saturday afternoon. The Broncos were able to flip the script from yesterday's doubleheader; pounding out 12 hits and scoring 14 runs in a shortened, 5-inning contest.

SUNY Delhi 14 vs. SUNY Canton 6

A relatively quiet first inning from both teams gave way to a scoring barrage over the final 4 innings. The Broncos were able to take a 2-0 lead in the 2nd. After a flyout, Jessica Kwasnik doubled to right center. Lauren Zecca immediately singled and promptly stole second to put two runners in scoring position. A Rhianna Iglesias batted ball caused an error to push Kwasnik across the plate. Caitlyn Gallagher would groundout to the right side but it would be enough to bring Zecca home. The lead only last a short time as the Roos would bring in two runs of their own in the bottom of the 2nd.

Canton looked to break the game open like Friday afternoon and would score three times in the 3rd after Delhi would go down in order. In the 4th inning the Broncos would channel some early season magic and bat around in the lineup and brought 11 batters to the plate in the inning. Rachael Scoones doubled to start. Scoones would then score on a fielding error caused by a Kwasnik at-bat. Zecca would single again. Iglesias added an RBI-groundout, scoring Kwasnik. Gallagher singled and advanced to second base on an error. Zecca would score. Back-to-back singles from Katelynn Rose and Kayla Beers followed. Mel Papuli doubled next to score Rose and Beers. Scoones would add a second hit in the inning and Papuli would be the 7th run of the inning. Canton would only tally a single run in the bottom half of the inning.

Delhi weren't finish yet. A 5-run top half of the fifth inning would push the lead to 8 runs and Canton couldn't prolong the game and only got one runner on base in the final frame. Gallagher/Papuli would each double in the 5th and Rose singled again.

Danielle Seymour started on the rubber for the Broncos, going the first two innings before making way for Papuli in relief. Papuli would strike out 5 in three innings and would pick up the win.

Papuli's two hits would lead all batters with 4 RBIs. Gallagher added 3 RBIs. Seven of the nine batters either scored twice or added two or more hits on the afternoon.

SUNY Delhi will look to conclude their regular season with one final game with SUNY Poly. The game will take place tomorrow May 1 with a 10:30AM start.
