Broncos Take First Game, Split Twinbill With Houghton

HOUGHTON, NY (March 18, 2022) -- In the Broncos first games back from their trip to Florida, they split a twinbill with the Houghton College Highlanders. Delhi would take the first game 4-2 before dropping game two by a score of 4-0.

DELHI (4) vs. HOUGHTON (2):

In an exciting first inning, both teams put multiple runners in scoring position but neither team could take advantage. Kayla Beers, who singled to center in the first, duplicated the feat in the top of the third inning. A double by Roselyn Monks put two more runners in scoring position but this time a Mel Papuli single drove in the games first two runs. A Highlander home run with one on tied the game at two and would stay that way until Delhi used some 7th inning magic to take the lead for good.

Though Houghton threated with runners on third in the 4th, 5th and 6th inning, they were unsuccessful in pushing a run across. Rachael Scoones was lifted for a pinch-hitter to start off the final inning. Jessica Kwasnik would prove the move was right with a double. Kwasnik would score the winning run, as the next batter, Mary Zeman, lined a double to left center. Papuli singled again and Zeman's run was insurance that the Broncos wouldn't need.

Papuli (2-2) had a day of it, going the full 7 innings and pitching out of several jams along the way while driving in 3 runs. Kayla Loomis took the loss for the Highlanders giving up 12 hits over 7 innings. Beers joined Papuli in the 2-hit club while Monks led the hit parade with 3 total.

HOUGHTON (4) vs DELHI (0):

Not to be outdone or put off, Houghton rebounded in game 2. Highlander pitcher Jen Burrows (2-0) subdued the Broncos' bats, scattering 5 hits over a full, 7 innings of work. Delhi was able to get a runner on in the first six innings but weren't able to find a timely hit to break the zero on the scoreboard. Houghton got the only run they would need in the first inning and then tallied a run in the 5th and two runs in the 6th.

Kitty Messina singled twice for the Broncos. Katelynn Rose (1-4) tossed 6 innings in the game 2 loss.

SUNY Delhi softball (3-7) won't return to action until Saturday March 26 when they head to Alfred State (NY) for a doubleheader. The Broncos will look to avenge a March 14 loss.

The first game is scheduled to start at 1PM with the second to follow shortly after game 1's conclusion.
