Tiebreaker Gives Women the Winning Edge to Open Year at Hartwick

ONEONTA, N.Y. (September 1, 2021) - The Broncos women's cross country team kicked off their season with a victory at Hartwick College's Dick Daymont Season Opener. Facing the host Hawks and SUNY Oneonta, the Delhi women put together an impressive total of 28 points which tied with the Red Dragons. The tiebreaker came down to the "scoring team's first displacer", which gave the edge to the Broncos. This marks their third consecutive victory at the Hartwick meet.

At the front for the Broncos over the 4-kilometer course was Katerina Salcedo with a second place finish in 17:31.80. Salcedo was closely followed by Sophie Stewart and Kristina Messler, who finished third and fourth in 17:51.36 and 18:25.34, respectively. The team scoring was rounded out by Mary Lyons placing eighth (18:42.13) and Kailyn Oregilo in 11th (19:36.06).

Shyanne Lawton's 12th-place time of 19:50.38 proved to be the deciding factor in the team victory, beating out Oneonta's sixth finisher that placed 13th. Alexandria Caceres (20:54.53), Anna Clarke (21:06.80), Hope Mulligan (23:12.38), and Amber Scruggs (23:19.46) rounded out the Broncos' day.

"Very impressive performances all around, especially from our freshman," related head coach Zach Brown. "I was very impressed with how the women performed today in the tough conditions," remarked assistant coach Ben Finnigan. 

Next up for the women is the Le Moyne College Invitational this Saturday, Sept. 4.
